I AM – week 1

I AM. (Week 1)
John 6:35-38
Introduction (John 6:35-38)
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.

  • Jesus is the giver of life…
  • Jesus is the sustainer of life…
  • Jesus is the authoritative power orchestrating life…
  • Jesus is the motivation for life…
  • In other words…
  • If you are alive in Christ you have been awakened to eternity…
  • If you are alive in Christ you have been enlighten by the Almighty…
  • If you are alive in Christ you have been raised from the dead…
  • You were once dead.
  • You were once without life.
  • Without feeling.
  • Without love.
  • Without taste.
  • Without your senses to the things of the everlasting.
  • But now…
  • You are not dead.
  • You are alive.
  • This is the definition of the gospel…
  • That you are no longer dead and because of Jesus you are alive!
  • Oh I wonder if this is you?
  • I wonder if this is your story?
  • I wonder if you know Jesus…
  • Do you have more than statistics and data about Jesus?
  • Do you have more than stories of a relative about Jesus?
  • Do you have a relationship with Jesus?
  • Or do you simply know about Jesus?
  • Have you simply been told of the characteristics of Jesus?
  • Have you been told of the power of Jesus?
  • Have you had someone explain the Holy Spirit to you?
  • Have you studied of the bigness of our God?
  • Oh or do you have first hand experience with the Savior?
  • Is the blood of Christ personal to you? Or is it simply informational?
  • Is the power of God evident within you and around you?
  • Or is it something you’ve only heard about?
  • Is the burden of God experiential to you?
  • Or is it something you’ve only read about?
  • Because I believe that living in East Tennessee within the bible belt can be divinely glorious…
  • But I also believe that if we are not careful it can be painfully dangerous…
  • To hear this gospel truth over and over and over and be unchanged and unmoved is sure to clarify that the hearer has no idea whats been done for them…

Pre-talk

  • Let me ask you this…
  • Does old news have the same impact as new news?
  • Are you following me?
  • What if I got up here this morning with all enthusiasm within me and told you this…
  • At 10:56 p.m. On July 20th, 1969, something happened that changed the trajectory of modern capabilities…
  • American astronaut Neil Armstrong, which was 240,000 miles from Earth, speaks these words to more than a billion people listening at home:
  • “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
  • As he was stepping off the lunar landing module Eagle, Armstrong became the first human to walk on the surface of the moon.
  • Now, did this news shake you to your core?
  • Did this news motivate you to be all that you can be?
  • Did this news raise your hopes and immediately begin to shape how you influenced your children to live their lives?
  • Judging by your response to the news…
  • Nothing really changed within you or around you…
  • Why?
  • Because old news typically doesn’t connect with you in the same way as new news…
  • But let me say this…
  • The gospel is the only news that has the power to sustain you in and out of every season…
  • The gospel is the only news that has the power to restore you in the most desperate of days…
  • The gospel is the only news that has the power to empower you, connect with you, and motivate you afresh on a moment by moment basis…
  • Listen to me…The gospel is this…
  • Jesus died for current sins: the sins that your currently involved in.
  • Lifestyle sins.
  • Sins that you can’t shake.
  • Sins that you aren’t willing to give up.
  • Sins that seem to control you.
  • Oh that Jesus would die for current sin displays His compassion.
  • Jesus died for past sins: the sins that haunt you and force you back into shame.
  • The shame that your continually reminded of.
  • The guilt that your consistently wearing.
  • Oh that Jesus would die for past sins displays His forgiveness.
  • Jesus died for your future sins: the sins that you will commit tomorrow.
  • The lustful moment.
  • The weak moment.
  • The times of temptation.
  • The times of rebellion.
  • Oh that Jesus would die for future sins displays His authority.

1. What are you looking for? (John 4:1-15)

  • Now I want you to know that the “I am” statements of Christ are recorded within the last 48 hours of his life.
  • Just before Christ would go to the cross…
  • Just before Christ would walk through pain and suffering…
  • Just before Christ would experience abandonment and loneliness…
  • I want you to ponder on this as if it was you in the text that was with Jesus…
  • These disciples had left everything behind to follow Jesus…
  • These men had abandoned their jobs, career, family business, finances, everything…
  • These men had devoted their life to spending it with Christ…
  • And Jesus kept saying things like “there is coming a day when I must go.”
  • “I am gonna send another comforter but I will be going back to the Father.”
  • “I must suffer even unto death.”
  • Jesus over and over again explained His coming death…
  • These men didn’t quiet get what Jesus was saying….
  • They didn’t quiet understand the eternal implications of what Jesus was saying…
  • Almost like they were looking for something else…
  • Almost like they were looking for a different outcome…
  • Isn’t this exactly like us?
  • We know the depths of the gospel…
  • We have heard the truths of the love message of the gospel over and over again…
  • Some of you in this place have read the bible in its entirety…
  • Some of you can recite every book…
  • Some of you can recite verses from memory…
  • Some of you hold theology degrees…
  • We whats in the book…
  • What are you looking for?
  • What do you expect to be the outcome?
  • Do you have false hope or incorrect expectations?
  • Jesus the Christ has made us a promise…
  • A promise of His return…
  • In just the same He made a promise that He would pay for the sin debt of the world…
  • The promise is that He will return as the King of Kings…
  • The Lord of Lords…
  • Set apart unlike any other…
  • There is none like this Jesus…
  • And one day every wicked heart will bow before the glory of Christ…
  • One day every injustice will bow before Christ…
  • Every terrorist, murderer, rapist, adulterer, manipulator, liar, and thief will stand within the accountability of Jesus Christ.
  • What are you looking for?
  • Are you looking to settle the score?
  • Are you looking to right the wrongs?
  • Are you looking to serve justice?
  • If you know the gospel you know that this isn’t our calling…
  • Your calling isn’t condemnation, judgment, and wrath.
  • Oh this reserved for the Almighty King of the Ages.
  • Your calling is to go and tell.
  • Go tell it the depths of the love of Christ.
  • Go tell it on the mountain…
  • Over the hills and everywhere…
  • Go tell it in the city within every corner and crevice of your reaching…
  • Go tell it in the community within every family and every friend alike…
  • Go tell of the love of Jesus.
  • Your calling has never been go and condemn.
  • Your calling will and forever be to go and tell of the love of Christ.
  • The result isn’t up you.
  • The progress isn’t up to you.
  • The process isn’t up you you.
  • Oh you and I are simply responsible of exhausting every day that we have been given to go and tell!
  • In scripture we are given the example of Jesus in one of the most well known passages of scripture…
  • Known as the woman at the well…
  • Go with me to John 4…

The woman at the well…(John 4:1-15)

Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), he left Judea and departed again for Galilee. And he had to pass through Samaria. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. Notice that it’s as if Jesus was intentionally waiting for someone…A woman from Samaria came to draw water. This woman came looking for the natural thing oh but she was about to recieve the spiritual thing…Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) It’s right here that we begin to see that this woman is looking for something…Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” In other words, what are you looking for? The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.“”

  • In other words…
  • Are you looking for temporary satisfaction?
  • Are you looking for the happiness of materialism?
  • Are you looking for words of motivation?
  • Are you looking for financial blessing?
  • Are you looking to please those around you?
  • Are you looking to prosper within popularity?
  • Jesus is eye to eye with this woman to say “what are you looking for?”
  • Jesus is the bread of life…what are you looking for?
  • Notice that the Samaritan woman was looking for someone or something…
  • The text refers to it being about the sixth hour which can be translated to around noon…
  • This is odd in this day and age…
  • This is odd within this culture…
  • For someone to travel out in the scorching heat at this time of day…
  • Surely this woman was trying to avoid other people…
  • This woman wanted to be alone as she knew that no one else would be at the well at this time of day…
  • This well was extremely popular early in the day by Jews and Samaritans…
  • This means that this Samaritan woman chose to take a back seat to the Jews and other Samaritans…
  • She approached the well later in the day to ensure she had no harsh dealing with anyone…
  • And again for whatever reason she wanted to be alone…
  • This implies that she is searching…
  • Maybe she was full of shame…
  • Maybe she was full of regret…
  • Maybe she just didn’t know what she was looking for…
  • Have you been there?
  • Maybe you are carrying around something that no one knows and its just to heavy…
  • Maybe you are tired of people not understanding you…
  • Maybe you are tired of people judging you…
  • Maybe you are tired of people discouraging you…
  • Maybe you are just tired of running…
  • What are you looking for?
  • Are you burdened?
  • Are you weary?
  • Are you troubled?
  • Are you frustrated in ministry?
  • Are you discouraged with religion?
  • Are you lost and can’t find the way?
  • Are you troubled and hopeless?
  • Listen to the words of Christ…

“Whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

  • The joy that Christ provides is unmovable…
  • The peace that Christ provides is unexplainable…
  • The authority that Christ provides is unshakeable…
  • The salvation that Christ provides in unending…
  • Oh what are you looking for?
  • Are you looking for comfort and ease?
  • Are you looking for popularity and fame?
  • Are you looking for processes and performance?
  • These things will never do…
  • Jesus is the giver of life.
  • Jesus is the sustainer of joy.
  • Jesus is the bread of life.
  • Jesus is the satisfaction you seek.
  • What are you looking for?

2. What are you withholding? (John 3:1-16)

  • Let me say it like this…
  • Over the course of this Christmas season our girls have gotten plenty of gifts…
  • Barbie dolls…
  • Outfits for dress up and sparkling dresses…
  • Stuffed animals…
  • Let’s just say that they have been spoiled this year.
  • But just this week Rachel had to go to work and it was me and the babies…
  • I decided that I wanted to do something for Jack and the girls…
  • I wanted to do something together that would be fun and they would really enjoy…
  • So I did the responsible thing…
  • We planned a Nerf gun war…
  • Olivia had her Nerf gun…
  • Abigail had her Nerf gun…
  • And it was me and Jack to take on the girls…
  • We had a blast but it ended with Jack taking a shot to the forehead…
  • It scared him so we had to calm it down…
  • So I had to take the Nerf guns and put them up…
  • Olivia & Abigail couldn’t understand why I had to put them up…
  • They could understand why I was keeping it from them…
  • They were not thinking that someone could get shot in the eye…
  • There didn’t care about someone getting hurt, they just cared about what they wanted…
  • I then told them to go get another toy to play with and we would play later with the Nerf guns…
  • It was like every other toy wasn’t as good as the Nerf guns…
  • All the sudden they forgot about all the other toys that are scattered all over their room…
  • They just wanted this one toy that was off limits…
  • I began to think on this…
  • Isn’t this just like us…
  • We all have that one thing….
  • We tell ourselves, “If only I had that one thing, my life would be complete.”
  • If only God would give me a more understanding boss.
  • If only God would take away this illness.
  • If only God would give me a spouse, or a better spouse.
  • If only God would make my kids more obedient.
  • Why would God keep that one thing from us?
  • Does God enjoy withholding the things we want most?
  • When it seems like God is keeping something good from us, it can be difficult and confusing…
  • We begin to ponder things like “I thought God loved me, and wanted what was best for me?”
  • “Why would He keep things from me?”
  • You might even begin thinking this way…
  • “God intentionally created a tree just so that he could withhold it from Adam and Eve…”
  • “Why would He do that?”
  • Perhaps the real head-scratcher is this…
  • When God gave Adam and Eve every single tree of the garden for food…
  • Why did they ultimately insist on having the fruit of the only tree that was off-limits?
  • Why were they so consumed with what they couldn’t have over and above of what they had been given?
  • Have you contemplated what you have been given?

Oh child of God…

  • Have you thought through the magnitude of your salvation?
  • Have you considered the calling and the depths of what it means to be a child of God?
  • You’ve been given life…
  • You’ve been given the leadership of the Holy Spirit…
  • You’ve been given the joys of Christ…
  • You’ve been given calling of Christ…
  • Maybe your stuck in the season of life and you can’t quiet get over what you do not have.
  • Maybe you just can’t get job you want…
  • Maybe you just can’t seem to find that significant other…
  • Maybe you just can’t get ahead financially…
  • Maybe you just can’t make any progress spiritually…
  • Oh could you understand that in your thinking that God is withholding something from you…
  • That in the depths of your soul, it’s you that is withholding from God…
  • Maybe your withholding your trust…
  • Maybe your withholding your faith…
  • Maybe your withholding your purpose and your calling…
  • Maybe your withholding from risks and you just want to be comfortable…
  • Let me show you how this plays out in the scripture…
  • Go with me to John 3…
  • We encounter a very familiar story…

Nicodemus…(John 3:1-16)

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night he came by night because he was withholding as he sought to retain his public status and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? This man was withholding his trust Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” This man was withholding risks as he was seeking after ease and comfort in this life Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

In other words…

  • Faith declares no more me…
  • Faith declares for I have surrendered all…
  • Faith declares for I have decided to follow Jesus…
  • For God so loved the world that He gave Jesus that you might believe…
  • Through your believing in the spoken word of God you can pass from death unto life…
  • The abandonment that Christ experience should have been your abandonment…
  • The persecution that Christ endured should have been your persecution…
  • The hatred that Christ walked through should have been your hatred…
  • The rejection of Christ should have been your rejection…
  • The death of Christ should have been your death…
  • Oh but I have good news…(Ephesians 1:4-5)

Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will…

  • He has chose you…
  • He has set you apart to be called Holy before Himself…
  • He has adopted us unto Himself…
  • According to His perfect will you have been called unto Christ Jesus…
  • You’ve not been called for less than…
  • You’ve not been called for mediocre ministry…
  • You’ve not been called to fix your eyes on what you do not have…
  • Oh child of God look up…
  • Look to the Heavens…
  • You’ve been called to life in Christ…
  • Christ has been given all power under Heaven and earth…
  • Christ has been given power over death…
  • What can stop the love of our God?
  • Oh would you stand up in the love of Christ?
  • You’ve been called for more!
  • Stop withholding and start worshipping!
  • Maybe your sitting their thinking…
  • How do I worship in the pain?
  • How do I worship when all I do is worry?
  • Hear me….Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!

Psalm 149 & 150
Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of the godly! Let Israel be glad in his Maker; let the children of Zion rejoice in their King! Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with tambourine and lyre! For the Lord takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation. Let the godly exult in glory; let them sing for joy on their beds. Let the high praises of God be in their throats and two-edged swords in their hands, to execute vengeance on the nations and punishments on the peoples, to bind their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron, to execute on them the judgment written! This is honor for all his godly ones. Praise the Lord!”

“Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens! Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness! Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

  • You see…
  • Nicodemus couldn’t stop thinking about what he didn’t have to fully comprehend what he had at his fingertips…
  • He had religion…
  • He had the Law…
  • He had significance…
  • He had influence…
  • The these are great and honorable…
  • Oh but he was standing before the King.
  • Jesus surpasses religion.
  • Jesus is the fulfillment of the Law.
  • Jesus is the epitome of significant.
  • Jesus is the depths of influence.
  • To walk in this life based upon the depths of who Christ is powerfully influences who you are and who you will be.
  • With Christ you are more than a conquerer…
  • With Christ you have been bright from death to life…
  • With Christ you will live from everlasting to everlasting…
  • Nicodemus was standing with Jesus and couldn’t get his eyes off of the limitations…
  • Nicodemus was claiming that our God was withholding life yet Nicodemus was the one withholding his trust…
  • What are you withholding?

3. Will you believe?

  • What are you looking for?
  • Jesus is the bread of life…
  • Jesus is the answer your seeking after…
  • Jesus is the joy that you desire…
  • Secondly, what are you withholding?
  • Jesus is faithful.
  • Jesus is love.
  • Jesus is calling you into deeper.
  • Lastly, let me ask you “will you believe?”
  • You see, in this walk with Christ we will be measured in eternity based upon the depths of how much we were willing to believe?
  • Will you believe that Christ offers life everlasting?
  • Christ offers life to the lost.
  • Christ offers sight to the blind.
  • If you are here and you have never given your life to Jesus, He is here.
  • Jesus is calling.
  • For God so loved the world that He gave His only son that He might have you.
  • Jesus wants you just as you are.
  • If you are here and you have never given your life to Christ today run to the altar.
  • Run to Jesus.
  • Run to the salvation that He offers.
  • Run, do not hesitate, run.
  • Run, do not tolerate the lies of the enemy, do not wait, run to Jesus.
  • But let me say this…
  • We find in scripture the prefect picture of a person willing to believe Jesus against all odds…
  • We find in scripture the most raw, authentic, and sincere response to the cross in the bible…

The thief on the cross…

  • This man was hanging next to Jesus just moments before the crucifixion…
  • He was guilty…
  • He was full of shame and regret…
  • He was moments away from death because of his criminal actions…
  • He was stained with sin and corruption…
  • But the bible records that this thief had one thing that you and I desperately need…
  • There is one thing that you and I need to powerfully walk with Christ and that is the willingness to believe.
  • Believe!
  • Oh would you believe that this Jesus is the Christ!?
  • He has conquered death, Hell, and the grave.
  • Surely He can conquer your situations….
  • Would you believe?
  • Would you believe that Jesus wants to use you?
  • Would you believe that Jesus could use you?
  • Would you believe that Jesus wants to bless you?
  • Would you believe that Jesus wants to open your eyes to the Heavens?
  • Would you believe with all of your heart?
  • Would you trust and believe?

In love,
Pastor Tyler

God is > part 5

God is > part 5
It’s gotta go…(James 4:7-10 )
Introduction (Ezra 3:11)
11 They sang with praise and thanksgiving to the Lord: “For He is good; His faithful love to Israel endures forever.” Then all the people gave a great shout of praise to the Lord because the foundation of the Lord’s house had been laid.”

  • Oh why did you come to church today?
  • Why have you been lifting up your voice to the Lord?
  • Why have you been offering up thanksgiving?
  • Oh it’s because our God is good…It’s because our God is faithful…
  • It’s because His love is over and above every area of life…
  • I know, I know, I know…
  • You might be sitting there today thinking…
  • “Tyler you don’t know the pain that I am in…”
  • “Pastor, you don’t know the anxiety that’s on me…”
  • “You don’t know the loneliness that I feel…”
  • Oh today can you sing with praise and thanksgiving….
  • Oh today can you lift up hands of worship even in season of worry…
  • You see, the living, breathing, healing, resurrecting, conquering, word of God says that our Jesus is good!!!
  • We have a promise is that our Jesus is faithful…
  • Oh that the love of Jesus is poured out upon His people…
  • We don’t have a hypothetical situation…
  • Oh hear me this morning, we have a living King a risen Savior!
  • Oh I wonder have you entered into this place with praise and thanksgiving…
  • I wonder have you entered into the sanctuary of the Lord tasting of His steadfast love of our God…
  • Or have you just made it…
  • Have you just slid into this place…
  • Maybe its all that you could do just to get here and maybe your just trying to sit here unnoticed…
  • Let me clear somethings up for you…
  • God wants more for you, He has called you into the deep end…
  • I believe Satan is trying steal joy, steal smiles, steal laughter…
  • Let me remind you that God is the giver of life…
  • And I am here today to tell you there are things you and I have to let go in order to make space for God…
  • Are you like me?
  • It’s all you could do to get all kids in the car…
  • It’s all you could do to make in here on time…
  • It’s all you could do to smile when there is so much going on…
  • It’s all you could do to be a good husband this week…
  • It’s all you could do to be a good employee this week…
  • It’s all you could do to be a good daddy this week…
  • It’s all you could do to be happy this week…
  • Are you trying to keep up? Are you weary? Are you tired? Are you burdened?
  • I wanna declare to you today “It’s gotta go!”
  • Fear has to go…
  • Hesitation has to go…
  • Anxiety has to go…
  • Worry has to go…
  • “It’s gotta go!”
  • I want to preach to you today and proclaim to you today that there are somethings that have to go if your ever gonna walk strongly with the Lord…

James 4:7-10
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

1. Submit yourselves to God.

  • Now, there is a clear calling from God Almighty unto His people…
  • And the calling is “submit yourself to the Lord.”
  • Oh it’s intentional…
  • It’s on purpose…
  • You cannot submit accidentally, you have to choose submission.
  • So what does this look like?
  • What is the impact on a persons life when they submit to God?
  • I believe one of the clearest pictures is recorded in Matthew 14…
  • This is just after the feeding of the 5000…
  • This is just after the remarkable event that took place where Jesus multiplied the small offering of the boy with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish…
  • The crowds were raging and the people were astonished…
  • People wanted to see more and more of the miracles of Jesus…
  • People desperately wanted the blessings of Jesus…

Matthew 14:22-27…
Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.“”

  • Does miss this…
  • The bible says that Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go before him…
  • Jesus made them go…
  • Jesus made them go unto the unknown…
  • Jesus made them go unto the raging sea…
  • Jesus made them go unto the storm…
  • The boat was beaten by the waves…
  • Oh can I tell you that sometimes following Jesus will take you into the storm…
  • Following Jesus will take you unto the raging sea…
  • Following Jesus will leave you beaten by the waves…
  • But you gotta know His ways are not our ways…
  • For my thoughts are not His thoughts…
  • For as the Heavens are higher than the earth so are the ways of the Lord higher than our ways…
  • Submit yourself before the Lord means when He says go, you go.
  • Even toward the unknown…
  • Even toward the raging sea…
  • Even toward the storm…
  • Oh because we have tasted and seen of the goodness of the Lord…
  • We know that He is only good and there is no evil deed within Him…
  • If the Lord is leading we are walking towards life everlasting!
  • You see, I believe the disciples knew this…
  • They had just enough faith to walk through the storms…
  • They had just enough faith to trust in the unknown…
  • They had just enough faith to continue on without Jesus holding their hand…
  • But the bible says “the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said “it is a ghost! And they cried out in fear!”
  • They were believing…
  • They were trusting, they were trying…
  • Then out of nowhere fear was matched up against faith…
  • Let me say that sin makes you do stupid things…
  • Sin makes you say stupid things…
  • The disciples had been with Jesus…
  • They had seen the power of Jesus…
  • They had heard the words of Jesus…
  • And in the middle of the storm these grown men cried out in fear “it’s a ghost!”
  • Let me say that panic is the opposite of submission…
  • Anxiety and fear is the opposite of trust…
  • Emotionalism is the opposite of faith…
  • Oh but in panic, fear, and worry notice how close Jesus is to the heart of the weary…

The faith of Peter…(Matthew 14:28-33)

And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”

  • Notice that in the midst of panic, fear, and anxiety Peter knew the voice of the Father…
  • Oh even though his eyes could not see He had the word of the Father…
  • Can I tell you that even when you can’t see the end our God has spoken…
  • He (Jesus) said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.
  • Notice that Peter had not placed His eyes fully upon Jesus…
  • Peter could only hear the voice of Jesus…
  • The bible records the raging sea, the heavy waves, and to add on an episode of Ghost Hunters…
  • Yet Peter got out of the boat, walked on water, and went to Jesus…
  • Think with me on this…
  • I believe Peter believed in Jesus with all his heart…
  • I believe Peter trusted the power of Jesus and the authority of Jesus…
  • In so much that he was able to step out within a situation that within human standards would have surely cost him his life…
  • Peter stretched out one foot across the rail of the boat…
  • Peter swung his body on the other side of the boat…
  • Peter stepped out on top of the water…
  • Oh maybe your here and God is calling you to take just one step toward Jesus…
  • Maybe your here and God is calling you to just believe…
  • Are you willing to get out of the boat that your stuck in?
  • Are you willing to stretch out and reach toward Jesus?
  • Are you willing to leave behind pain, struggle, depression, and fear?
  • Are you willing to live through eyes of faith?
  • Oh I wonder are you willing to step out toward Jesus?
  • Listen to me closely…
  • Trusting Jesus will enable you to do things you’ll never be able to do on your own…
  • Trusting Jesus will empower you to go places you’ll never be able to go on your own…
  • This mere man named Peter was standing in the glory of the Lord by and through faith…
  • For just a moment Peter was fixated more on Jesus that he was in fear of the surroundings…
  • For just a moment Peter put on display the life that you and I are called toward…
  • Within the depths of His heart Peter was fully satisfied with Jesus…
  • Almost as to say “fear has to go…”
  • “Worry has to go…”
  • “Panic has to go…”
  • For my eyes have seen the Lord and behold He is good!
  • But the bible records the main issue within our heart…
  • The bible states…

But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.“”

  • Why did he see the wind?
  • Why was he afraid?
  • Why did he begin to sink?
  • Why did he cry out in fear of losing his life?
  • Get your eyes submission before the Lord…
  • Hear me…
  • You can’t unsee things that you’ve seen…
  • Peter shifted His eyes off of the Savior and onto the situation…
  • The wind caught his eye…
  • The waves grabbed his attention…
  • The circumstance demanded his emotion…
  • Can I tell you this morning that the enemy wants you to get your eyes fixated on the problems within our day…
  • The enemy wants you to look to the magnitude of the brokenness…
  • Because if you’ll just look at the situation you’ll believe the lies…
  • Oh could we get our eyed upon the Savior…
  • Could we get our eyes submissive before the Lord…
  • Because I have seen the goodness of the Lord…
  • Is the glory of the Lord enough for you?
  • Do you need something else or someone else?
  • Because I don’t believe that we see the works of the Lord and leave dissatisfied…
  • The bible records that when man sees the beauty of the Lord that the only response is “woe is me! For I am ruined! I have seen the glory of the Lord!”
  • No, No, No….
  • We are not dissatisfied…
  • Peter was fully satisfied in trusting the Lord…
  • Peter said “Oh God if it’s you command me to come to you upon the water.”
  • Jesus spoke out “come.”
  • Peter had not seen the Lord…
  • Peter had not recognized the Lord…
  • Yet Peter was walking in the center of the will of God within the full power of God…
  • I believe with all my heart that Peter wasn’t dissatisfied…
  • Peter was simply distracted…
  • Just like you and me…
  • Our eyes are submissive to the situation rather than the Lord…
  • And we see that when Peter had his eyed upon the Lord that he stood within the glory of the Lord fully satisfied within the Lord.
  • Oh hear me this morning, submit yourselves, with all that you are and all that you have unto God!
  • Let whatever it is that is keeping you from the Lord, let it go…
  • Let the feelings of betrayal go…
  • Let the bitterness growing inside go…
  • Let the disappointment go…
  • Let the worry go…
  • You know that it’s a choice right?
  • The enemy will make you believe that its more than that…
  • The enemy will make you believe that its about the other person…
  • The enemy will make you believe that you deserve justice and you deserve answers…
  • Oh you’ll never find your life until you lay it down…
  • You will never hear the word of God until you hit your knees…
  • Submit!
  • Submit with your whole heart.
  • Submit yourselves to God.

2. Resist the devil and he will flee.

  • Recorded in James 4, we see another charge to live within the authority of Christ…
  • Secondly, we see “Resist the device and he will flee.”
  • Resist his lies.
  • Resist his tactics and temptation.
  • Resist and refuse his misleadings.
  • Maybe your sitting here and your saying “How? How do I resist the devil?”
  • “He is in my marriage.”
  • “He is destroying my finances.”
  • “He is destroying my relationships.”
  • “He is destroying my joy.”
  • “How do you resist the devil?”
  • Oh I am glad you asked…
  • In the book of Nehemiah we see this come to life…
  • In Nehemiah chapter 1 we encounter a man depressed before the Lord.
  • We encounter a man broken down, heavy in burden, and full of anxiety…
  • Listen to how this unfolds…

Nehemiah
And they said to me,”The remnant there in the province who had survived the exile is in great trouble and shame. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are destroyed by fire.“”

  • Notice there is always time for bad news…
  • There is always time for criticism, gossip, and discouragement…
  • No matter the season in life that your walking in, there is always a group of people in life ready to broadcast to your soul the bad news…
  • Oh when it comes to bad news, there passionate, zealous, and urgent…
  • Where is this in good times?
  • Where is the longing to encourage?
  • Where is the desire to build someone up?
  • The bible says “and they said to me there is great trouble and shame. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down and it’s gates are destroyed by fire.”
  • The bible records that as soon as Nehemiah heard this news he sat down.
  • In other words…
  • This news shook him to his core.
  • This news caught him off guard.
  • This news ran through his soul.
  • Nehemiah sat down and mourned for days.
  • Nehemiah couldn’t eat, he couldn’t sleep, and he couldn’t smile.
  • He was broken-hearted…
  • He was depressed and troubled before the Lord…
  • He felt forsaken and abandoned by the Lord…
  • He felt alone and stranded…
  • I wonder if this is common place among us today?
  • I wonder if you’ve ever been there?
  • I wonder if you have ever doubted in the private places of your heart if God is even listening to you?
  • I wonder if you have ever thought more about your pain than the promise?
  • You see, I believe Nehemiah had a moment just like you and I have…
  • I believe Nehemiah struggled just like you and I struggle.
  • It’s like this…
  • Maybe you spent years and years praying to have children…
  • Maybe you begged God.
  • Maybe you cried out to God.
  • Parents, do you remember how it felt to just imagine that you had kids?
  • Oh you imagined them always being obedient…
  • You imagined them being so sweet and so loving…
  • You imagined them being so respectful and so smart…
  • You imagined them being your best friend and nothing would ever separate this bond…
  • Oh it was going to be great!
  • Fast forward to dreaming about being a parent to actually being a parent…
  • Now you spend all your time praying to the Lord to fix these kids…
  • Oh it’s not quiet like you imagined…
  • There is tiresome nights when your lucky to get an hour of sleep…
  • There is crying…
  • There is sickness…
  • You didn’t think about the diaper season of life…
  • You didn’t think about the million times that you’d wear spit up…
  • You didn’t think about the fighting with siblings and selfish phase…
  • I began to think that Nehemiah is just like me and you…
  • He was a cup bearer to the King…
  • He was in the place of royalty and blessing…
  • Oh but with more blessing comes more pressure…
  • Nehemiah had the promise of God…
  • Nehemiah had the blessing of God…
  • Nehemiah had the favor of God…
  • But in an instant things changed…
  • The enemy had dropped a season of pain upon Nehemiah…
  • Mourning, sadness, depression, heartache, and a burden…
  • Oh but can I show you the heart of a man that resists the devil?
  • Can I show you the response of one walking with the Savior?
  • Because we all have these situation from time to time…
  • If you live long enough heartache will find us all…
  • Yet the difference is the foundation of Christ Jesus…
  • Listen to me…
  • In the good times I’ll choose to lift high the precious name of Jesus!
  • In the bad times I’ll choose to find my strength in the conquering name of Jesus!
  • Your heart must cry “Even so come, Lord Jesus, come”….
  • Nehemiah lift up his voice…
  • Nehemiah chose to worship rather than to remain in worry…

And I said, “O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for the people of Israel your servants, confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Even I and my father’s house have sinned.

  • In other words…
  • When I was down, when I was joyless, when I was broken-hearted, and just before I was deafened…
  • I’ll lift up my voice…
  • “O Lord God of Heaven!”
  • “You are great!
  • “You are awesome in power!”
  • “You are mighty in strength!”
  • “You are an overcomes!”
  • Oh this means I have the power of the Lord!
  • This means I have the strength of the Lord!
  • This means I too am an overcomer!
  • Nehemiah chose to declare in the season of hopelessness…
  • He chose to declare “watch, just watch what my God is about to do!”
  • Oh some of you here today need to lift up your confidence to declare back your problems “just watch what my God is gonna do.”
  • I am not saying you have to have the answer…
  • I am not saying you have to feel good about it…
  • Oh but I am saying you have to believe!
  • Believe that Christ is the Healer!
  • Christ is the Savior!
  • Christ is the Restorer!
  • Christ is the Physician!
  • Christ is the mountain mover and Christ is the chain breaker!
  • Listen to what happens…

Nehemiah 4…

  • Nehemiah left the King and left the palace…
  • Nehemiah left the comfort and the ease because of a burden…
  • Nehemiah declared in the name of the Lord that he would rebuild the walls!
  • As soon as he lifted up his voice here comes the enemy…
  • Can I tell you that as soon as you lift up your voice for Jesus you will be surrounded by critics, skeptics, and gossips…
  • Here came Sanballet…
  • Here came Tobiah…
  • Here came the Arabs and the Ammonites…
  • Nehemiah 4:7-9 records this unfolding…
  • The bible says…

But when Sanballat and Tobiah and the Arabs and the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem was going forward and that the breaches were beginning to be closed, they were very angry. And they all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and to cause confusion in it. And we prayed to our God and set a guard as a protection against them day and night.

  • Oh did you see it?
  • Did you hear the battle plan?
  • Did you hear the secret to resisting the devil?
  • Did you pick up on how to make the devil flee?
  • Nehemiah declared “And we prayed!”
  • What if?
  • Oh can I tell you I that no matter the situation…
  • No matter the circumstance…
  • No matter the pain…
  • No matter the confusion…
  • No matter the heartache or depression…
  • If you’ll add unto your actions “and we prayed!”
  • If you’ll just build within your behavior “and we prayed!”
  • If you’ll become and expert in the area of “and we prayed!
  • You will see the walls be rebuilt in your life!
  • You’ll see the glories of God raised afresh within you!
  • You’ll see the marvelous workings of the Holy Spirit of God around you!
  • Resisting the tactics comes from crying out aloud unto the authority of King Jesus!
  • Oh when you refuse the lies of the enemy…
  • When you lift up your voice unto King Jesus…
  • Resisting the devil, raising your praise unto Jesus, indeed the Satan must flee.
  • At the name of Jesus, fear must go.
  • At the name of Jesus, pain must go.
  • At the name of Jesus, the dead must live.
  • At the name of Jesus, the enemy must flee.
  • Resist the evils of the devil and he will flee.

3. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.

  • First, you must submit with all that you are and all that you have unto Christ…
  • Secondly, you must resist the lies of the devil and know that in the name of Jesus he will flee…
  • And the last thing I want to leave you with is knowing that if you’ll draw near to God, He will draw near to you!
  • If you’ll leave behind the distractions…
  • If you’ll leave behind the temptation…
  • If you’ll leave behind the luring of the evil one…
  • And if you’ll draw near to Jesus, oh the bible declares that indeed Jesus will draw near to you…
  • Just as Peter took one step toward Jesus…
  • He stepped out of the boat and on to the water toward Jesus…
  • Oh Jesus was closer to him that he thought He was…
  • Oh Jesus was close enough to embrace him in the storm…
  • Jesus was close enough to save him in the midst of trouble…
  • Draw near to God and our God will draw near to you…
  • Just one cry toward heaven gets the attention of God…
  • Just one prayer of repentance gets to the heart of God…
  • Just one move towards Jesus unveils the love of God…

The Prodigal Son…

  • We see this all throughout scripture…
  • Yet, we see this most clearly in the scriptures with the report of the Prodigal Son…
  • We read about a man who had 2 sons…
  • The younger son said unto his father “I’m moving out. Would you give me my inheritance?”
  • “I am ready to do things my way.”
  • “I am through listening you, no disrespect but I can do things better my own way.”
  • Yet the bible says that the young man took all of his inheritance and blew it on fast living and bad choices…
  • Now and famine came upon the land and the young man had not prepared or retained anything financially.
  • The bible records that this young man was caught in riotous living…
  • Unruly, rowdy, uncontrollable, unmanageable, and lawless living…
  • Yet there came a day that the young man was in want…
  • Let me say it like this…
  • He began to think clearly…
  • He began to asses himself with clear judgement…
  • He began to want more than temporary materialism…
  • He began to long for more than a grab at popularity, fortune, and fame…
  • He began seeking for satisfaction, meaning, and purpose…
  • But he had wondered so far away…
  • He had lost his way and wandered within the depths of shame…
  • The bible records that this young man was lost and filled with so much shame…
  • He went from the royalties of the King to begging to be fed with the slop bucket of pigs…
  • Can I tell you that sin will take you way off course…
  • Can I tell you the lies of the enemy will progress you within bitterness…
  • Can I tell you that pride and arrogance will blind you of the riches of Christ…
  • Let me ask you…
  • Do you remember when all you wanted to do was trust Jesus?
  • Do you remember when all you wanted to do was act out in faith?
  • Oh you looked for every opportunity you could find to lift up the name of Jesus…
  • You would go to the supermarket just hoping you could share the wonderful name of Jesus…
  • You wished for people to come to you with problems so you could share with them the good news of Jesus…
  • You had no arrogance…
  • You had no bitterness…
  • You had no pride…
  • And you had no experience…
  • Oh you just wanted to trust Jesus!
  • Maybe your here and you’ve had a few years of experience…
  • Maybe your here and you’ve got some tenure within your walk with Jesus…
  • But maybe your here and your just trying to do this thing on your own…
  • Maybe your thinking “no offense Jesus but if you’d just give me the blessing and get out of the way I can handle this thing on my own.”
  • I mean you’ve got your own dreams…
  • You’ve got your own desires…
  • You’ve got your own way…
  • And here you are years into this thing and you’ve wandered so far away…
  • You’ve went through a season of famine…
  • No spiritual growth…
  • No presence of Christ…
  • No relationship with Christ…
  • Everything in you and around you feels like its dying…
  • Maybe it’s worse than you thought it would ever be…
  • Maybe you’ve gotten to the place where you swore you’d never let it get to…
  • Maybe you keep finding yourself doing things that your swore you’d never do…
  • Maybe you have went from the royalties of the King to the slop bucket of sin…
  • And you just don’t know what to do anymore….
  • Are you sitting in the seat week in a week out and your just afraid?
  • Are you hearing the word of God and feeling the truth of God but your just numb?
  • Are you settling for the slop bucket of the pigs in your spiritual life?
  • Oh can I tell you God want to show the world what He can do through you!
  • Our God doesn’t save you to sit you…
  • Or God saves you to send you…
  • Oh whatever you have He wanted it…
  • Whatever you’ve done He will restore it…
  • But the bibles says it like this….
  • “But when he came to himself…”
  • Do you know what this means?
  • Do you know what it means to come to yourself?
  • It means that you are wandering along doing the same old things that you’ve been doing…
  • Maybe your stuck in sin, maybe your stuck in shame, maybe your trying to justify your lifestyle…
  • Oh but then Jesus passes by…
  • The love of Jesus comes calling…
  • In this moment the Prodigal Son remembered the love of the Father…
  • In an instance the Prodigal Son was awakened to the heart of God…
  • The Prodigal Son said “rather than begging for the food of pigs, oh I can go to the Father.”
  • My Father’s servants have more than enough…
  • Oh I’ll rise and go to the Father…
  • I’ll stand to my feet and go to the one who loves.
  • I’ll get up out of this shame and go the one who provides.
  • I’ll get up out this misery and go to the one who is good.
  • Oh and as soon as the Prodigal Son made it to the property line…
  • The Father was looking from afar…
  • As soon as the Prodigal Son drew near to the Father, did you know that the Fahter drew near to him…
  • The Father ran from afar and embraced the son full of compassion…
  • Oh the Father gave him a kiss…
  • The Father declared get the best robe, put a ring on his finger, and shoe shoes on his feet…
  • Oh can I tell you that if your here today and your waiting…just take a step towards Jesus!
  • Can I tell you that if your here today and your ashamed…just look up, the Father is near!
  • Draw near to God and He will draw near to you!

In love,
Pastor Tyler

God is > part 4

God is > part 4Here I am… (James 2:26)

Introduction

  • This morning I am gonna get straight to it…
  • No messing around…
  • You see I believe that there are some people here this morning that need to meet with Jesus.
  • So we are about to pray together before we dive into the word of God…
  • And I wonder if there is anyone here today desperate enough to cry out to Jesus?
  • I wonder is there anyone here today that wants to hear a word from God?
  • We don’t have time to play games today…
  • We are gonna pray that King Jesus would show up and show out…
  • We are gonna believe that eyes are gonna be opened…
  • We are gonna believe that the lost are gonna be saved…
  • We are gonna believe that Jesus is in this place…

Pre-talk…

  • Let me say that today is a special day…
  • God has given me a specific word for you…
  • Last week we broke down the life changing reality that “Faith works” from James 2:14-26…
  • And let me remind you…
  • Faith works in the season of suffering…
  • Faith works in the difficulty of depression…
  • Faith works when nothing else can…
  • When everything seems hopeless and all seems lost, faith works…
  • Our God is notorious for letting the situation appear as if everything is stacked against us…
  • Only to unveil that only His power…
  • Only His authority…
  • Only His hand can crush the hand of the enemy…
  • Well today God has laid upon my heart a very familiar passage…
  • Today I want to preach from James 2:26…
  • And I want to make sure you don’t miss this…
  • I want to preach a message entitled “Here I am…”

James 2:26

  • I have one verse today that I want to stamp upon your heart…
  • I want you to highlight this verse in your living….
  • Circle this verse…
  • It’s Facebook worthy…
  • Whatever you do, I need you to get this 1 verse upon your heart…
  • Quickly, go with me to James 2:26…

“For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.”

Exegesis

  • In other words you are dead without Jesus…
  • You are lifeless without the Spirit of God…
  • You are unable to feel with out God within you…
  • Oh but when the Spirit of God is alive within you, faith will be active within you.
  • Faith without work is dead…
  • Faith without work is without the Spirit of God…
  • Faith without work is without the leading of Christ…
  • Faith without work is without the relationship with Jesus…
  • If you know Jesus, you’ll have the burden of Jesus…
  • If you have the burden of Jesus you’ll be on mission working with Jesus…
  • And can I say too you that in order to be changed by the marvelous power of God you have to get close enough to see…
  • Are you following me?
  • Let me say it like this…
  • Just this week our little Olivia had her Kindergarten play and she was so sweet…
  • Rachel had her hair curled and done just right…
  • Olivia had a shiny and sparkling dress that made her look like Cinderella…
  • She had matching shoes and matching jewelry…
  • Rachel and I didn’t want to miss this in anyway so we got there an hour early to be sure we got seated on the front row…
  • So it was about 10 minutes before the Christmas play started and Olivia came up to Rachel and I and whispered that she was nervous…
  • Now you gotta know that over the last month Olivia has said her lines 100 times…
  • Over the last month she has been singing the songs thousands of times…
  • She had been so confident, yet right before the show started she was nervous…
  • So Rachel and I grabbed her by the hand and we went back stage and practiced with her…
  • We showed her what was gonna happen, where she was gonna stand, how she would walk out on stage…
  • We went over everything with her…
  • We let her know the teachers were gonna help her in anyway she needed them…
  • But she couldn’t take her eyes off of the 500 people sitting in the sanctuary…
  • So Rachel began saying Olivia’s lines for her…
  • And then Olivia said “I can do this.”
  • I could see her go from fear to faith…
  • She believed again…
  • She trusted again…
  • She picked up her confidence…
  • In just the same way…
  • Some of you need to go from fear to faith today…
  • Some of you need to believe again!
  • Some of you need to trust again!
  • Oh could you run back toward your confidence in the Lord!?
  • Oh could we come to comprehend that this is the only way to approach our God…
  • Come into His sanctuary…
  • Come seeking the glory of the Lord…
  • Come and get as close as you can because our God will not disappoint…
  • For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
  • Maybe the clearest picture of this truth is found in Isaiah 6…
  • I want you to see this…
  • Feel free to make your way to Isaiah 6 as we are gonna bring this thing full circle…
  • But let me just say that there are seasons in life that the body is alive but the human spirit is dead…
  • Do you know what I mean?
  • It’s like you see things happening…
  • You feel things taking place…
  • You hear the news of other people making a difference in life…
  • Your body is alive and your witnessing life go by, but the spirit within you is dead…
  • It’s like your on cruise control…
  • There is no taste of goodness…
  • There is no first experience of first hand excitement…
  • There is no feelings of passion or zeal…
  • There is just another day, another week, and another month…
  • There is another holiday, another event, another celebration…
  • Your awake and your eyes are blinking…
  • But when it comes to taste, touch, and hearing your lifeless and spiritless…
  • But listen to me…
  • You gotta know that you were called by the marvelous love of Jesus to live!
  • You were never meant for depression or fear…
  • You were never meant for anxiety and worry…
  • You were meant to live in the fullness of Jesus Christ!
  • Listen to the words found in Isaiah 6…

Isaiah 6:1-8…
In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.” And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.

  • Notice that Isaiah remembered everything about what he saw…
  • Can I tell you that if you have been with Jesus you remember what it felt like…
  • If you have been with Jesus you remembered what it looked like…
  • You don’t forget when the God of the universe shows up…
  • It’s not answers to a test your trying to memorize…
  • It’s not important dates on a calendar your trying not to forget…
  • When you are with Jesus you remember where you were…
  • You remember what was going on around you…
  • Because the last words of Jesus are the first words you speak…
  • Look at the life of Isaiah…
  • Isaiah records “in the year that King Uzziah died…”
  • Isaiah knew the year…
  • Isaiah knew the diplomatic leader…
  • Isaiah knew it was in the significant season of change…
  • Because Isaiah saw the Lord!
  • Isaiah records that the train of the robe of our Lord filled the temple…
  • Oh this is good news…
  • In ancient times the train of a robe symbolizes glory and splendor…
  • To understand this you must understand in ancient times only the rich could put on display their glory…
  • Each piece of fabric was stitched by hand to display ones significance…
  • The longer the train the more glorious the King…
  • When you think of the robe of our King think of His authority…
  • When you think of the robe of our King think of His perfection…
  • When you think of the robe of our King think of His incomparable splendor…
  • Then the bible records that above Him stood the seraphim…
  • The created and angelic beings designed from the hand of God…
  • The seraphim were calling out to each other….
  • Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord; the whole earth is full of His glory!
  • And another angel would cry out…
  • Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord; the whole earth is full of His glory!
  • And then another would cry out…
  • Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord; the whole earth is full of His glory!
  • And then another would stop and say no, no, no, you don’t understand….
  • Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord; the whole earth is full of His glory!
  • In the middle of this Isaiah declares “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”
  • And this is where I want to spend our time today…
  • Have you seen the King?
  • Have you seen your shame?
  • Have you seen your need for the Savior?
  • Have you seen His worth!?
  • Listen to me…
  • Today on this Sunday I have not just come to preach…
  • Today I want to help you go deeper, I want to give you a proclamation for Monday!
  • In this text we see 3 distinct ways to approach God…
  • Follow me…

1. Here I am, save me.

  •  After Isaiah saw the Lord and I want you to listen to what happens next…

And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!“”

  • There was no pride…
  • No self worth…
  • No self righteousness…
  • No excuse…
  • When Isaiah was before the Lord, he had nothing to say except “Woe is me! For I am lost.”
  • He goes onto say “I am a man of unclean lips and everybody else around me is too unclean before the Lord.”
  • In other words…
  • There is none that compare…
  • There is no one or no thing that draws a parallel to the mighty hand of God…
  • So here I am Lord!
  • My eyes have seen your goodness and my heart knows your ways…
  • O God I am stained before you…
  • I have sinned….
  • I have rebelled…
  • I have wandered away…
  • I have doubted your word…
  • I have suppressed my living with fear and anxiety…
  • I am lost.
  • Would you hear me today??
  • Before you can ever be saved you must first understand that your lost.
  • Did not Jonah cry out in the midst of trouble and distress unto the Lord?
  • Did not Nehemiah fast and pray unto the Lord in the midst of ruin?
  • When you get more desperate for the presence of the Lord than the preference of your flesh, you will see the move of God!
  • God is not interesting in your bartering…
  • “God I’ll give you my life if you’ll give me your blessing.”
  • “God I’ll give you my trust if you’ll give me a breakthrough.”
  • God is not interested in your performance…
  • You can’t clean yourself up enough…
  • You can’t present yourself will enough…
  • You can’t earn your way into the favor of God…
  • God is most interested in your submission.
  • He wants your heart.
  • He wants your trust.
  • He wants your time.
  • He wants a relationship.
  • This means you’ll go public for Christ.
  • This means you’ll be faithful to Christ.
  • But how? How do you get to Jesus?
  • How do you walk with Jesus and talk with Jesus?
  • How do you and I have relationship with Jesus?
  • This is the question that every sincere lost person wants to know?
  • Even the most cold hearted unbeliever is slightly interested in hearing how to know that you know Jesus…
  • The bible says that Isaiah looked and seen the Lord!
  • Are you looking for the Lord?
  • Are you seeking after the heart of the Lord?
  • Would others speak of you as having been with Jesus?
  • Are you guilty by association?
  • Let me say it like this…
  • What if we came to church this morning and it came time for me to get up and preach and I wasn’t here…
  • Byron and the band were playing softly hoping that I was gonna pop up on stage somewhere but as seconds turned to minutes, I was nowhere to be found…
  • Then after about 15 minutes of waiting…
  • I come bursting through the doors and down the stairs and I ran to the stage…
  • And then I came up here and said “folks I am sorry I am late but it has been a crazy morning…”
  • Out of breath and trying to calm my nerves down I begin to tell you that I had a flat tire…
  • I begin to explain that I was on my way to church and I got out of the car to change my tire…
  • As I was changing my tire I accidentally stepped out to far into the road and an 18 wheeler hit me…
  • The way I was dressed was in order…
  • My physical appearance was nothing out of sort…
  • But I was breathing hard and a little nervous…
  • You would be thinking 2 things…
  • This guy is a liar…
  • This guy has lost it and he is crazy…
  • Because if you or I were hit by an 18-wheeler everything about us would be changed in an instance…
  • Oh can I say to you that when you encounter Jesus every single thing changes!
  • What you see changes…
  • Where you go changes…
  • What you say changes…
  • What you do changes…
  • Life changes and they way you live changes…
  • There becomes 1 thing upon your heart to proclaim….
  • Jesus!!!
  • Here I am, save me!!!
  • More than that, Isaiah looked, seen the Lord, and believed the Lord!!
  • Isaiah’s cried out “Woe is me!”
  • For my eyes have seen the Savior!
  • In other words…Here I am, save me!
  • Can I ask, have you been with Jesus?
  • Can I ask, do you need Jesus?
  • I am afraid that we are a people that try to live like we are strong enough…
  • I am afraid that we are a people that try to live like we are smart enough…
  • I am afraid that we are a people that try to live like we are determined enough…
  • Oh could today be the day that we drop such pride?
  • Could today be the day that we drop such arrogance?
  • Let me say to be in the center of the will of God will always and forever be to proclaim “Here I am Jesus, save me!”

2. Here I am, build me.

  • Stay with me…
  • Pick back up the same text that we started with…
  • James 2:26…

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

  • Listen to me…
  • If your here and you have been born again…
  • Your a christian, you are saved, and your a child of God…
  • Can I tell you that your called to risk everything that you have for Jesus?!
  • Your called toward missions…
  • Your called to speak out the gospel…
  • Your called to begin new ministries…
  • Your called to risk your popularity…
  • Your called to risk your finances…
  • Your called to go to the broken to bring them unto healing…
  • The body of a believer cannot be described as a dead person…
  • The body of a believer cannot be described as powerless, bitter, and hateful…
  • The body of a believer must living out loud in the depths of faith!
  • Oh you ought to be believing God…
  • You ought to be going for God…
  • You ought to be loving for our God…
  • The life of a believer is a life of desperate crying out to God to proclaim “Here I am, build me!”
  • You see this in the text…
  • Isaiah has seen the Lord…
  • Isaiah cries out “woe is me.”
  • “I am unclean.”
  • “Those of which I associate with are unclean.”
  • Lord cleanse me…
  • Create within me a clean heart…
  • In other words…
  • Stop thinking your good enough, your not.
  • Stop thinking your strong enough, your not.
  • Stop thinking your capable enough, your not.
  • Stop thinking your smart enough, your not.
  • You can’t earn the love of Christ, it’s freely given.
  • You can’t work for the favor of God, it freely given.
  • You can’t perform well enough for the blessings of God, it’s freely given.
  • I believe with all of my heart that our God works like this…
  • Just this week Abigail had to be rushed to the ER…Abigail is our 3 year old.
  • We had just finished dinner and I made the girls a deals…
  • I said “If you girls can go clean your room and get it nice and neat daddy will take you all to get hot chocolate and we can drive around and look at all the Christmas lights.”
  • Well, they cleaned for about 5 minutes and then I heard them running back in forth to Jacks room…
  • Olivia was chasing Abbey…
  • So I yell out and reminded them “girls, we can’t go until your room is clean.”
  • Then 5 minutes went by and I hear Abigail crying the serious cry…
  • As a parent you know the difference between a “I’m hurt cry” and “it’s really serious” cry…
  • Abigail had ran through the hall way and tripped over the rug in Jacks room and landed head first on the rocking chair in Jacks room…
  • Abigail had to have 4 stitches in her forehead…
  • I tell you this to say this…
  • I am daddy…
  • I know whats best for them…
  • I told them several times what needed to done.
  • I wanted to give them something good…
  • Yet their disobedience lead to pain…
  • Can I say to you that God wants to build within your heart the heart of faith…
  • God is about building trust within you…
  • God is building hope within you…
  • God is building patience within you…
  • Oh but you and I are called to obey.
  • Yet when you in seasons of disobedience…
  • When your in seasons of doubt…
  • And you start wandering by walking your own way…
  • Do you not know that some of the pain that you experience is due to the stubbornness of the flesh…
  • You and I are smart enough to know what good and bad looks like…
  • The reality is sometimes we just choose what we want…
  • Oh but can I remind you that in order to stand tall in the power of Christ, you must learn how to declare “Jesus, Here I am, build me!”

3. Here I am, send me.

  • Would you stand with me?
  • Can I say to you that when you have a heart that proclaims “Here I am, save me….”
  • When you have a heart that proclaims “Here I am, build me…”
  • You will have a heart that declares “Here I am, send me!”
  • When Isaiah saw the glory of the Lord he cried out “save me.”
  • When Isaiah saw the glory of the Lord he cried “I’m unclean and the people with me are unclean.”
  • Oh he was not only conferenced about himself…
  • The Lord had built within him the heart to care for others…
  • But I want you to play close attention of the words Isaiah speaks unto the Lord…
  • Send me!

Listen to the words of Isaiah….

Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.” And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me

  • The angel of the Lord took the burning coal from the altar…
  • The altar is the place of crying out before the Lord…
  • The altar is the place of worship before the Lord…
  • The altar is the place of getting your heart synced with God’s heart…
  • It’s as if Isaiah was baptized in the burden of God…
  • When the angel of the Lord touched Isaiah’s mouth he then proclaimed “your guilt is taken away and your sin is atoned for.”
  • Isaiah was reminded that the Lord saves…
  • Isaiah was reminded that the Lord builds…
  • And then Isaiah heard the voice of the Lord…
  • The Lord spoke and said “whom shall I send and who will go for us?
  • And with all passion within his heart Isaiah declared “Here I am, send me!”
  • I want you to notice Isaiah didn’t say send a mighty army…
  • He didn’t say send more resources…
  • He didn’t say send a powerful leader…
  • He didn’t say send peace, love, and happiness….
  • Isaiah declared boldly before the Lord “Send Me!”
  • Oh Send me!
  • For my eyes have seen and my ears have heard of the goodness of the Lord, Send me!
  • Send me!
  • Use me!
  • Let me speak out the word of God!
  • Let me stand tall in my community for the Lord!
  • Let me lift up my voice in praise for the Lord!
  • Send me!
  • Oh the more time that you spend with Jesus the more you will desire to go for Jesus!

Here I am Jesus, save me.
Here I am Jesus, build me.
Here I am Jesus, send me.
In love,
Pastor Tyler

God is > part 3

God is > part 3
Faith works. (James 2:14-26)

Introduction

  • Can I say to you that I have waited all week to get here to you…
  • God has been speaking to me this week…
  • Today we have a day unlike any other…
  • This day has been set apart from the hand of God…
  • And can I tell you that our God desires to speak directly to you!
  • Can I tell you that our God has a word just for you!
  • You don’t have to have everything figured out…
  • You don’t have to have this church thing figured out…
  • You don’t have to be perfect…
  • You don’t have to be clean and pure…
  • Just one word from God can change what you see…
  • Just one word from God can change your direction…
  • Just one word from God can take you from passiveness into passion…
  • Just one word from God can take your eyes off of the situation and get them on to the Savior..
  • Just one word from God can take you from shame and regret to the joys of the Lord…
  • I want preach message today from our series “God is >” called Faith works!

James 2:14-26

What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? See thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

1. Faith works in the season of suffering.

  • James 2:14-16

What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?

  • In other words…
  • Faith is not words of your beliefs…
  • Faith is not words of tradition or passed down religion…
  • Faith is not your personal convictions…
  • Faith is not your interpretation of the bible…
  • Faith is not your theological disposition…
  • Faith is an unwavering reality that Jesus is indeed who He says He is!
  • Jesus is the set apart Messiah…
  • Jesus is the Lamb of God…
  • Jesus is the Savior upon the cross…
  • Jesus is the Forgiver of sins…
  • Jesus is the Resurrected King…
  • Oh because that these truths have been revealed to your heart, His truth invade your reality.
  • Your faith is active and no just spoken of.
  • Your faith is powerful and not just celebrated.
  • Your faith is unwavering, steady, and unshakeable because of who Christ is…not because of who you are!
  • But I want you to see a life changing reality…
  • I want you to pick up some power today for what may come tomorrow…
  • Hear this…
  • “What does it profit to say I have faith and not put your faith on display?”
  • What good is it to claim to know Jesus yet there be no substance?
  • What good is it to claim to know Jesus without the evidence of Christ within you?
  • There is no profit in claiming Christ while aligning with the powers of this age…
  • Are you publicly claiming Christ while privately maturing the flesh?
  • Are you celebrating your traditions in Christ while missing out on the power of Christ?
  • Does your social status claim a child of the King while your actual reality is that of an imposter?

Faith works…

  • Faith is the evidence of things not seen…
  • How can you apply this to your living?
  • How can you grab ahold this certainty in days of despair?
  • Can I tell you that faith works in the season of suffering…
  • Our God does the bulk of His work in times of trouble to bring you into times of transformation…
  • Has anybody ever been in trouble?
  • Has anyone ever need answer and couldn’t find it?
  • Has anyone ever felt hopeless with no way out?
  • Has anyone ever been in the middle of difficulty with no end in sight?
  • Hateful or hurtful words…
  • Persecution for your faith…Abandonment from a close friend or family….

After the crucified Jesus…

  • Can I tell you that faith works!
  • Faith works in seasons of suffering…
  • We see this in the life of the disciples after the crucified Jesus…
  • Jesus had claimed to be the living God…
  • Jesus had claimed to be the Messiah…
  • These disciples left behind everything just to be with Jesus…
  • And now Jesus was murdered upon the cross…
  • This escalated very quickly into a season of suffering…
  • Go with me to Mark 14:46…
  • We are gonna pick it up at the arrest of Jesus…
  • This is just after Jesus had been trying to pray in the place called Gethsemane…
  • Jesus knew His hour had come for His arrest and that this would ultimately lead to the crucifixion…

46 And they laid hands on him and seized him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant5 of the high priest and cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled. “And they all left him and fled.”

  • As I read this text I couldn’t stop thinking about this heroic moment…
  • The Roman soldiers circled Jesus and then seized him…
  • The plot had just thickened…
  • It seems as if Jesus was out of control and someone had to do something…
  • It seemed as if the personal ministry of Jesus was coming to a close…
  • Then out of nowhere here comes the apostle Peter…
  • Peter decides he is going to take matters into his own hands…
  • Peter whips out a sword…
  • He then struck the servant of the high priest…Peter cuts off his ear!
  • Now either Peter was caught up in the moment…
  • Or he was off balance…Or he just had terrible aim…
  • But in this most epic arrest in all of history, Peter sought to protect our Jesus…
  • Maybe he thought he would be honoring Jesus…
  • Maybe he thought he had to take up for Jesus…
  • Maybe he thought this things was totally up to him…
  • What would be the response of Jesus?
  • What would be the emotion of Jesus?
  • Notice the words of Jesus…
  • Luke 22 records that Jesus rebuked Peter and said “no more of this!”
  • Here in Mark 14, Jesus rebukes those arresting Him…
  • Jesus says “I was with you every day in the temple and you did nothing.”
  • “Now you have came with swords and clubs as if to capture a known robber.”
  • But as I read this text it just bothered me that Jesus rebuked Peter…
  • It bothered me that Jesus seemed to make matters worse for Himself…
  • The bible records that after this encounter that everyone with Jesus left Him…
  • They all fled.
  • They all abandoned Him in this season of suffering…
  • Peter courageously went to battle for Jesus…
  • It’s as if Peter did everything that He could possibly do to free Jesus…
  • But the bible records that Jesus healed a man that came to arrest Him…
  • What?
  • Why?
  • How could He still be thinking of others before Himself?
  • I believe here in this moment we see Jesus put on display the will of the Father…
  • I believe here in this moment we see Jesus put on display the reality that faith works…
  • This thing has never been about your own capabilities…
  • This thing will never be about your performance…
  • Life in Christ has to be rooted in trusting the perfect will of the Father.
  • You can’t put all of life’s struggles on your shoulders…
  • You can’t put all of life’s heartaches on your back…
  • This is why Jesus rebuked Peter…
  • This is why Jesus rebuked those arresting Him…
  • Getting ahead of the perfect will of God is equally sinful as lagging behind in disbelief.

4 ways to determine if your living a life of faith:
1. Are you trusting Jesus no matter the outcome of your situation?

  • Do you find yourself leaning more toward doubt or are you sold on the authority of Jesus?

2. Are you confident in Jesus no matter the emotions of your predicament?

  • Do you find yourself in worship when you out to be angry?

3. Are you convinced that Jesus has all seasons of your life under perfect control?

  • Do you approach heartache with anxiety?
  • Do you live day to day in worry?

4. Are you actively pursing believing Jesus even if your circumstance is hopeless?

  • Are you taking risks with your money to glorify Jesus….
  • Are you taking risks with your faith to glorify Jesus…
  • Are you taking risks with your abilities/talents to glorify Jesus…

The calling…

  • You and I are called to serve the seasons of suffering with a faithfulness unto Christ…
  • Likewise…
  • You and I are called to serve in the heroic moment with an undying faithfulness unto Christ.
  • You can’t have one without the other…
  • Fear cannot begin to overwhelm us in so much that we progress unto doubt.
  • Doubt leads to getting ahead of God…
  • Doubt says “I refuse to wait on God…”Doubt says “I am god and Christ is not.”
  • Faith displays worship in the midst of waiting…Faith displays control in the midst of panic…
  • Faith displays joy in the midst of persecution…
  • Because we now know that faith works in the seasons of suffering.

2. Faith works in the difficulties of depression.
James 2:17-23

  • Now think through this given text…
  • Here in James 2 we get a reference of Abraham sacrificing Isaac by and through the command of the Lord…
  • Abraham was not justified before the Lord by his words…
  • Abraham was not justified before the Lord with good intentions or acts of morality…
  • Abraham was justified before the Lord because his faith in the Lord!
  • Faith is the differentiator in life…
  • Faith is the very thing that brings about change…
  • Faith is how a person moves from selfishness unto obedience before the Lord.
  • Faith works even in the difficulties of depression…
  • Go with me to Genesis 22…
  • I think its a remarkable truth that the record of Abraham obeying the Lord is found in the book of the beginning…
  • And let me say to you before you can live this life with the power of the Lord you too must obey the Lord…
  • Life begins with faith!

The faith of Abraham…
After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.””

  • I want you to notice the response of Abraham when God spoke…
  • God said “Abraham!”
  • Abraham replies “Here I am!”
  • I wonder if this is your relationship with the Lord?
  • Here I am God!
  • No excuses, no agenda, no thing is more important than the spoken word of the Lord…
  • But there is a lot of life that took place between Genesis 22:1-2 and verse 3…
  • God commands “Take your son, your only son, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering.”
  • In other words…Take what is most dear to you…
  • Take the most prized possession…
  • Take the thing that matters most to you…
  • Take it and sacrifice it before the Lord…
  • Sacrifice it before the Lord and know that God is good…
  • Know God is good and believe with all your heart that there is nothing that can compare to the goodness of God…
  • Now I want this to sync it…
  • Look at my boy Jack…He is 15 months old…
  • He is full of life…He is happy and rarely gets upset…
  • He always has a smile on his face…
  • Take one of life’s most prized possessions…
  • You see, someone could steal my things…
  • Someone could vandalize my home and ruin the memories…
  • Someone could take my material things…
  • But no one could take away the fact that this little guy calls me dad.
  • Jack is my son and I am his dad.
  • The magnitude of this request before Abraham is unlike any other.
  • Imagine the emotion…Imagine the petitioning before the Lord…
  • Imagine the fear, worry, and anxiety…Imagine the depression that Abraham felt…
  • Look with me at the text…

Genesis 22:3-14…

“So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar.”

  • Oh I wonder if Abraham believed God so much that he knew that indeed God would show up on the third day…
  • The third day is the day of triumph…
  • The third day is the day of conquering…
  • The third day is the day of life…
  • The third day is when our Jesus raised up over death, Hell, and the grave…
  • Oh I believe Abraham believed God so much that he would declare the goodness of God through his actions!

“Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” Listen to the confidence in the Lord from the words of Abraham And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together. When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.

  • God will provide…
  • God is greater than your emotions…
  • God is greater than your limitations…
  • God is greater than your pain and suffering…
  • Oh and in this moment we see that God is greater than the unknown…
  • Abraham had no way of knowing the outcome…
  • Abraham had no certainties…
  • Abraham had no rock solid answers…
  • Yet Abraham pressed passed the season of suffering…
  • Abraham pressed passed the difficulty of depression…
  • And He fixed His eyes upon the Lord!
  • Oh can I ask you what rattles your faith?
  • Is it bad news?
  • Is it things not going you way?
  • Is it not hearing from the Lord based upon how long your willing to wait?
  • Listen to me…
  • The Lord called to change everything about the life of Abraham…
  • The Lord called to sacrifice the single most prized possession to right size his faith…
  • There is to be nothing that you deem more worthy than your relationship with the Lord!
  • Sacrifice may be the most authentic display of worship to the heart of a believer…
  • An offering to the Lord may be the most sincere display of worship of the heart of a believer…
  • You can’t manipulate sacrifice…
  • You can’t misinterpret an offering…
  • Abraham’s actions were devoted to the Lord because His heart was devoted to the Lord!
  • Abraham’s motivates were bathed in worship unto the Lord because His life was centered on relationship with the Lord.
  • A foundation isn’t built upon situation…
  • A foundation isn’t built upon circumstances…
  • There is a season of joy…
  • There is a season of happiness…
  • There is a season of pain…
  • There is a season of heartache…
  • On but there is one thing that will always remain which is the goodness of our God!
  • He is good when we can’t see his goodness..
  • He is good when we don’t feel like believing it…
  • Your decisions cant be rooted in the momentary seasons of life…
  • Your motivates, decisions, and living must be rooted in a moment by relationship with Jesus the Christ.
  • Because we now know that faith works even in the difficulty of depression.

In love,
Pastor Tyler

God is > (part 2)

God is > part 2
God is greater than your excuse (James 1:19-27)

Introduction (Psalm 46:1-11)

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns. The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Come, behold the works of the Lord, how he has brought desolations on the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire. “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”

  • If the season of trouble comes and we need power, Christ is our strength.
  • If the day comes when we are failing and need help, Christ is our comforter.
  • If sickness or disaster draws near, Christ is the Healer.
  • If lostness or loneliness visit our way, Christ is the Savior.
  • God is greater than trouble.
  • God is greater than difficulties.
  • God is grater than sickness.
  • God is greater than bad news or confusion.
  • God is greater than anxiety and or fear.
  • Let me remind you that God stands outside of time.
  • Let me remind you that God is from everlasting to everlasting.
  • He has known you before you were conceived.
  • He has monitored your days before you live them.
  • Our God has power within His hands!
  • Our God has authority within His word!
  • So let me say to you this day that God’s word is relevant…
  • God’s word is intentional and it’s specific…
  • Are you here today longing for a word from God?
  • Do you need a word form Heaven?
  • You see, I want to shift from a “hearer of the word” to a “doer of the word.”
  • I want to shift from the temporary things to the eternal things…
  • I want to lean less and less on my own capabilities and lean more and more own Christ’s capabilities.

Hearer vs. Doer…

  • Let me lay the foundation of our text like this…
  • This week has been absolutely crazy inside our house…
  • Let me remind you that I have a 5 year old daughter, a 3 year old daughter, and a 14 month old baby boy…
  • I’ll paint you a picture like this…
  • Most days the girls are driving each other nuts…
  • Olivia spends her time tattling on Abbey for the 1000th time over random information…
  • Abigail spends her time singing to the top of her lungs of random words she thinks of…
  • Jack spends his time just trying to figure out his crazy sisters…
  • There is a lot of randomness in our house…
  • I know the girls hear what I am saying but I am convinced that they hear another language when I speak…
  • I’m convinced they understand how we want them to act to only find out that they have absolutely zero understanding of how to treat one another.
  • Seriously…
  • Just the other day Abigail, our 3 year old got into trouble for the 40th time in the same hour and I stopped and asked her “what are you doing?”
  • And she looked back at me and said “I’m just 3.”
  • In this moment I began thinking how in the world am I gonna help these little delinquents function as normal humans in society?
  • It’s hopeless and it’s impossible!
  • But just the other day during one of these very same interactions God kind of sucker punched me in the soul…
  • Everything was crazy and Rachel and I were frustrated at the girls for there wild randomness and it was one of those times when you wanted them to be serious but there was no hope…
  • So Abigail went up to her room to play…
  • It had been 20 to 30 mins and she was being very quiet…
  • Now typically this means something really bad has happened and shes being quiet enough that we might not find out…
  • So Rachel noticed that she was being extremely quiet…
  • So Rachel quietly walked up the stairs to find Abigail taking all her bedding off and trying her best to neatly fold it…
  • Rachel says “Abigail what are you doing?”
  • Abigail very directly replies “you know not all kids have beds.”
  • She then goes on to explain of how she doesn’t need it as much as someone else and she is gonna give her bed away.
  • I remember thinking…
  • All of that doubting…All of that frustration…
  • All of that anxiety
  • All of that worry…all of the emotions
  • She’s not just a hearer of the word…
  • She’s not just letting all that we say go in one ear and out the other…
  • She’s not just watching us literally kill ourselves trying to help her understand who Jesus is…
  • She is becoming a doer of the word!
  • She is hearing this word and now shes acting on it!
  • This is exactly where we are in the text…
  • Oh that we might not simply rest with the hearing of the word of God…
  • Yet, within all that we are, that we might become doers of the word of God.

James 1:19-25

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”

1. God is greater than what you can see.

  • Pick it up with me beginning back at verse 19…
  • We read be eager to listen and slow to speak…
  • We read be slow to wrath upon another…
  • Rid yourself of filthiness…
  • Rid yourself of shame…
  • This means there should be no secrets.
  • There should be nothing hidden among you.
  • Husbands, would you give your wife your phone for a week with the password?
  • Wives, would you let your husbands have access to all your text messages?
  • No secrets.
  • No hidden agenda.
  • We are called to be transparent before the Lord.
  • We are called to receive the engrafted word of God.
  • Don’t miss this church…
  • God is still calling His people.
  • The word of God is sustainable and unable to fail.
  • The world of God is engrafted into time and history.
  • It has been before us and it will go after us.
  • Our God is still calling sinners into salvation.
  • Our God is still calling men and women to lift up their voice to declare this gospel.
  • Men you are being called by God to passionately pursue the heart of God with all that you are!
  • Women you are being called by God to strongly declare in every avenue of life the gospel of Jesus!
  • The gospel is meant to be preached by men, women, boys, and girl.
  • The gospel is meant to be proclaimed throughout the community, city, unto the world!

  • In other words…
  • In all that you do lift up you voice for Jesus!
  • In all that you do showcase the love of Jesus!
  • No thing and no one can disqualify you from passionately pursing the heart of Christ!
  • No matter if your male or female…
  • No matter if your young or old…
  • No matter your race or background…
  • No matter if your rich or poor…
  • The word of God calls us to go into the deep end to know all the more the depths of the love of Jesus Christ!

Reality

  • There is just one problem…
  • What we see often dictates how we act.
  • We know that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
  • But the problem with every single person under the sound of my voice is the things that we can see…
  • We see disaster and we see heartache.
  • We see disease and we see poverty.
  • We see abuse and we see drug addiction.
  • We see divorce and we see murder.
  • We see rape and we see injustices.
  • We see and begin rationalizing this gospel…
  • We see and begin analyzing the word of God through logical reasoning…
  • Yet, faith is the substance of things hoped for…
  • Faith is only active when your petitioning God the Father in things of hope!
  • Oh let me show you this….
  • In Matthew 26 we find a remarkable passage of scripture…
  • We get a glimpse at the humanity of Christ…

Matthew 26:36-39
Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.“”

  • Faith is only active when your petitioning God the Father in things of hope!
  • Jesus was troubled to the very core of His soul.
  • Jesus was pressed down to the reality that He was about to pursue the sinners cross.
  • Jesus cried out “Oh Father if it be possible, let this cup pass from me.”
  • “Oh God would you intervene?”
  • “Oh God would you make another way?”
  • The heart of Christ was marinated in hope unto the Father.
  • Yet, in the midst of personal hope, Jesus was rooted in undying faith.
  • Your personal hope can never eclipse the perfect will of God.
  • Your hope cannot be rooted in your preferences or desires…
  • Your hope cannot be rooted in selfish gain or prideful results…
  • Your hope must be rooted in knowing that the final outcome is resting in the all sufficient authority and perfect will of God the Father.

Perplexed but not abandoned…

  • 2 Corinthians 4:8 has to become your mission statement for life…

We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.

  • Jesus was afflicted in every way, but not crushed.
  • Jesus was perplexed in every way, but not driven to despair.
  • Jesus was persecuted in every way, but not forsaken.
  • Jesus was struck down in every way, but not destroyed.
  • Jesus could have let His hope be limited to what He could see…
  • Jesus could have let His hope be limited to how He acted…
  • Oh but His hope was rooted in knowing the perfect will of the Father.
  • His hope was centered in knowing that no matter the pain, difficulty, or season of pain that God Almighty would expose His perfect authority through Christ the Son.
  • Can I tell you that you and I have to get our faith and hope off of what we can see…?
  • Can I tell you that you and I have to get our faith and hope off of the magnitude of the circumstance…?
  • In Christ you will be afflicted…
  • You will be perplexed…
  • You will persecuted…
  • You will be struck down…
  • But our faith must reside in the evidence of things not seen.
  • There is evidence of the spoken word of Christ.
  • There is evidence of the personal life of Christ.
  • There is evidence of the healing power of Christ.
  • There is evidence of the life changing love of Christ.
  • There is evidence of the cross of Christ.
  • There is evidence of the resurrection of Christ.
  • There is evidence of grace and mercy of Christ.
  • Our faith is not resting in what we may see…
  • Our faith and hope is resting in the evidence of things not seen.
  • In faith God hears the prayer of His people…
  • In faith God works all things together for those who He loves…
  • In faith God takes tragedy and constructs triumph.
  • In faith God takes what is meant for evil and exposes His glory.
  • So hear me this morning, God is greater than you excuse!
  • We do not fight our battle in reasoning or logical thinking…
  • We do not fight our battle in simply analyzing the data…
  • We do not fight out battle in gathering extensive training or an building an arsenal of weapons.
  • We fight our battles in faith!
  • We fight our battles in declaring with all of our heart that we will trust King Jesus!
  • Trust is the highest form of worship.
  • Trust is the highest form of adoration unto Christ.
  • Trust is the highest from of honor that you can place upon Christ.
  • To declare “I trust you Jesus” is of the most authentic praise.
  • Because we know God is greater than what you can see.

2. God is greater than what you can feel.

  • Quickly go back with me to James 1:22…

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

  • Can I tell you that following Jesus doesn’t always look like you think it’s going to look?
  • Can I tell you that following Jesus doesn’t always feel like you think it going to feel?
  • I remember when I first began my personal ministry and I was serving as a Youth Pastor at First Baptist in Weber City, Va.
  • I remember having such a desire to help motivate these young people toward Jesus…
  • I remember thinking “I am going to help these guys be pastors in there High Schools.”
  • “I am going to help them know the Bible and be ready to attack the issues in their day.”
  • “I am going to serve beside them and we are gonna change the world.”
  • Well that’s not what happened…
  • I remember having counseling sessions with high school students that were involved in self harm…
  • I remember having counseling sessions with high school students that were being abused…
  • I remember having real conversations with real people that had been in church their whole life and they were admitting they just didn’t know this Jesus…
  • At times I felt overwhelmed…
  • At times I felt excited to see people finding Jesus…
  • At times I felt nervous and just didn’t want to mess up…
  • At times I felt responsible for others spirituality and it was heavy…
  • At times I felt fearful for the lack of concern that some showed toward Jesus…
  • At times I felt serious about explaining the depths of gospel…
  • At times I felt convicted and I just couldn’t play youth games when people needed Jesus!
  • But hear me…
  • God is greater that what you can feel…
  • God is greater than your emotions…
  • James 1:22 is not just a bible verse, James 1:22 is a plan of attack over the enemy.
  • James 1:22 is a battle plan to conquer our own excuses.
  • James 1:22 is a action plan to conquer worry and fear.
  • But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
  • You see, worry is a proponent of the enemy.
  • Worry births doubt in the goodness of Christ.
  • Oh but hearing the word of God paired with doing the word of God eliminates worry and leaves us standing in the depths of worship.
  • The enemy wants to leave you fixated on your emotions…
  • The enemy wants you ponder and worry…
  • The enemy wants you to mature in anxiety and fear…
  • The enemy wants you to progress in hesitation and passiveness…

Barnabas

  • Quickly go with me to Acts 9:26…
  • I want you to see that God is greater than your feelings…
  • In this text we encounter a man named Barnabas…
  • In the storyline this is just after the conversion of a man named Paul…
  • Paul was most known as the great persecutor of the Christian church when Barnabas met him…
  • Barnabas was not as well-known as Paul yet Barnabas was the man who took Paul under his wing when no one else wanted to trust Paul.

Listen to the text…(Acts 9:26-31)

And when he had come to Jerusalem, he attempted to join the disciples. And they were all afraid of him, for they did not believe that he was a disciple. But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles and declared to them how on the road he had seen the Lord, who spoke to him, and how at Damascus he had preached boldly in the name of Jesus. So he went in and out among them at Jerusalem, preaching boldly in the name of the Lord. And he spoke and disputed against the Hellenists. But they were seeking to kill him. And when the brothers learned this, they brought him down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus. So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied.

  • In other words….
  • All were afraid of Paul and looked through eyes of hatred and condemnation…
  • All were rooted in their emotions and all had already disqualified Paul…
  • They didn’t like they way he looked…
  • They didn’t like the way he dressed…
  • They didn’t like the way he talked…
  • They didn’t trust Paul…
  • They didn’t believe Paul…
  • These men couldn’t see what God was doing because they couldn’t get past what they wanted.
  • They wanted to feel what they were use to feeling.
  • They wanted to hear what they were use to hearing.
  • They wanted religion when God was offering revival.
  • Listen to me…
  • They were rooted in their emotions.
  • Now don’t get me wrong.
  • God give us emotions.
  • It can be a good thing to expose your feelings to another person…
  • It can be a good thing to be open and transparent with how your feeling…
  • It is a great thing to speak with compassion and to listen with a heart of concern…
  • But a person rooted in their emotions will lead a life of insecurities…
  • Ultimately a person rooted in their emotions will mature in passiveness that leads to misery…
  • Follow me here…
  • These men were driven by emotion…
  • These men were God’s men.
  • They were believers.
  • They were preachers and teachers of the gospel message.
  • They were disciples called by Christ…
  • Yet, they were most concerned about their feelings…
  • Emotional vs. Spiritual…
  • Right here in the text we get a chance to compare what it looks like to be rooted in the emotional things vs. being rooted in the spiritual things…
  • Or you could say it this way….
  • We get a chance to compare the heart of worship vs. the heart of religion…
  • You see, a heart stuck in religion is fixated on the external things…
  • The appearance…
  • The situation…
  • The circumstance…
  • Their control…
  • Their authority…
  • Their preferences and processes…
  • Oh but the heart of worship is connected with the internal things…
  • The heart of worship is connected with the spiritual things…
  • I want you to see what the bible says about this man named Barnabas…

Look again at Acts 9:27…

“But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.

  • Barnabas took Paul and brought him to the apostles…
  • Barnabas was not rooted in the emotional things…
  • Barnabas was not fixated on this man’s past…
  • Barnabas was not most concerned about his mood or his personal state of mind…
  • Because I am sure he had reservations about this man named Paul…
  • Paul had a staunch resume of persecution unto Christians…
  • But I want you to know that Barnabas was most concerned about the spiritual thing…
  • The bible says that Barnabas tool Paul among the disciples…
  • Barnabas took Paul into the midst of this emotional and hostile crowd…
  • But Barnabas went declaring unto them how he had seen the Lord…
  • More than that Barnabas explained of how he spoke with the Lord…
  • He then declared that this man Paul was found preaching in Damascus in the name of Jesus!
  • Barnabas looked past the items on the surface…
  • He looked past the distractions of the all the emotions…
  • Barnabas knew that this man had been with Jesus because he had spoken to Jesus
  • Oh did you know that God is greater than what you can feel?
  • Maybe some of you keep finding yourself stuck in the same cycle of anxiety because you keep feeding your emotions….
  • Maybe some of you keep living the same season of misery because you keep looking to your circumstances for happiness…
  • Maybe some of you are losing your joy in this life because you let your mood dictate your praise…
  • Oh can I tell you that when your rooted in a relationship with Christ you have the authority to act within actions of faith?
  • Barnabas spoke words of encouragement that lead to actions of faith…
  • Barnabas spoke truth and love when everyone else around him could only speak out condemnation…
  • Barnabas spoke from a heart of worship when everyone else spoke from a heart of religion…
  • Barnabas spoke from the spirit lead place when everyone else was fixated on the emotional lead place…
  • Barnabas was engrafted into the word of God…
  • Now I don’t know about you but I couldn’t stop wondering how could Barnabas see the will of the Father when everyone else around him spoke out such condemnation upon Paul….
  • I mean why didn’t Barnabas grab ahold of the bitterness and criticism just like the other disciples?
  • Why didn’t Barnabas become consumed with the same fear as the others?
  • I want you to see this…
  • God showed me this in our text….

Listen to the words found in James 1:21…

Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

  • In other words…
  • Set aside all shame and regret…
  • Set aside all wanting for gain and greed…
  • Set aside all selfishness that may lead unto actions of guilt…
  • Set aside the flesh and receive Jesus.
  • Receive the word of God that is meant to guide your steps…
  • Receive the word of God that is meant to navigate your thinking…
  • Receive the word of God that you may see through the eyes of God…
  • You see, Barnabas had received the word of God.
  • Barnabas had went to his men and spoken out of how he’d been with the Lord and he’d spoken to the Lord…
  • The engrafted word of God was alive within this man named Barnabas…
  • The Holy Spirit of God was intertwined with the actions of Barnabas…
  • Barnabas had no dealings with the distractions of the emotions because he was putting on display that he had a relationship with the word of God…
  • More than that, Barnabas had a one on relationship with Jesus, the very imagery of God.
  • I’ve come here to tell someone today that before you can ever put on display the power of God your gonna have to get caught up in a relationship with God…
  • The engrafted word of God is reserved for His children…
  • The word of God is not something to be read, it a life to be lived.
  • Every time that you read the word of God…
  • Every time that you believe the word of God…
  • Every time that you act on the word of God…
  • It’s as if the Holy Spirit of God breathes on you again…
  • You see, in the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God.
  • If your a child of God the word of God is what keeps life within you.
  • The engrafted power of God has been injected into your bloodline.
  • It’s like this…
  • When Rachel and I got married her life was engrafted with my life.
  • We were joined together as one whole.
  • We were fastened together by the engrafted word of God.
  • She is no longer Rachel Matthews, she is now Rachel Dalton…
  • All that I have, she has. All that she has, I have.
  • All that I am known by, she is known by. All that she is known by, I am known by.
  • Her reputation is my reputation, my reputation is her reputation.
  • All that I am, she is.
  • All that she is, I am.
  • In just the same…
  • In just the same, all that God, is I am.
  • All that God has, I have.
  • Stop with the emotions…
  • Stop feeling sorry for yourself…
  • Stop counting yourself out and looking to your past…
  • Stop calling yourself unqualified, ignorant, or unworthy.
  • Stop calling yourself worthless, unimportant, or valueless.
  • God is not these things…
  • The word of God is clear on the characteristics of God…
  • Our God is powerful and forceful.
  • Our God is holy and set apart.
  • Our God is bold and courageous.
  • Our God is strong and mighty.
  • Our God is the the very epitome of glory.
  • Our God is the Savior.
  • He is strength and He is control.
  • He is the all sufficient sustainer.
  • He is the Healer.
  • He is the Redeemer.
  • He is the divine Forgiver.
  • He is our Defender.
  • So pay close attention with the bible says that you have been engrafted in to the word of God!
  • Oh child of God lift up your voice!
  • Oh son of salvation and daughter of deliverance…
  • You have something to say!!!
  • Did you know that everything that He is, you are?
  • Everything He has, you have.
  • His reputation is your reputation…
  • His victory is your victory.
  • His eternity is your eternity.
  • Your no longer a slave…
  • You can be called free!
  • Your no longer stained with sin…
  • You have the righteousness of Christ!
  • Your no longer haunted by your past…
  • You have the authority of Christ!
  • Your no longer limited by your mistakes…
  • You have the power of Christ…
  • Your no longer bound by your limitations…
  • You have the boldness of Christ…
  • Your no longer own your own…
  • You have the love of Christ…
  • You have the truth of Christ…
  • You have the grace of Christ…
  • You have the mercy of Christ…
  • You have the forgiveness of Christ…
  • Because God is greater than what you can feel.

In love,
Pastor Tyler

James 1:1-18

Introduction

  • Let’s get straight to it this morning…
  • I’m gonna be upfront with you…
  • Right out of the gates this morning, I am here to tell you that God is greater than anything that you might walk through in the life…
  • It doesn’t matter what happens to you…
  • It doesn’t matter what you experience…
  • It doesn’t matter if you can see it or feel it…
  • It doesn’t matter if you believe it or not…
  • God is greater than your situation at work…
  • God is greater than that job you didn’t land…
  • God is greater than the relationship that you just lost…
  • God is greater than success and God is greater than failures..
  • God is greater than shame and God is greater than regret…
  • God is greater than performance and God is greater than religion…
  • God is greater than your past and God is greater than the current season…
  • Listen to me this morning…
  • No matter our limitations…
  • No matter if we serve God or rebel from God…
  • God is greater than anything in this life thats we deem worth chasing after.
  • And over the next several weeks we are going to dive deep into the book of James with this major truth pressing up on heart….
  • But let me say it to you in this way…
  • I’ve come to church today to encourage your faith…
  • Oh did you know that we are the people that have placed all of our faith, hope, and trust unto Jesus?
  • We are the people that believe in the healing hands of Jesus…
  • We are the people that believe in the power of prayer unto Jesus…
  • We are the people that believe in waiting on the promises of our Jesus…
  • We are the people that comprehend that there is no victory outside of Jesus…
  • We know that every other thing offered outside of the goodness of Jesus is a distraction…
  • We know that every other season in life that may get our eyes watching situations or circumstance is only a scheme by the evil one to steal our joy in Jesus…
  • Do you believe in the mighty name of our Jesus?
  • Do you speak out this truth?
  • Do you live out this truth?
  • Do you actually believe verses like Ephesians 3:20?
  • That our God is able to do far more than we ask or think…
  • That our God is able to display His power at work within us…
  • That our God can raise our expectations….
  • That our God can surpass our wildest dreams…
  • You, see I want to surround myself with people that are crazy enough to believe Jesus.
  • I want to live this life refusing to settle for man’s expect ions…
  • I want to live this life believing with all my heart of the spoken word of Christ!
  • Would you ask God to raise your expectations and motivate your heart for His glory?

James 1:1-18

1James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.
2My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
5If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 6But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. 8A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
9Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted: 10But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. 11For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.
12Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
13Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: 14But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. 16Do not err, my beloved brethren. 17Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. 18Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

1. God is greater than your temptation.

  • Pick it up me with back in verse 2…
  • We read count it all joy when you fall into temptation.
  • So the first thing you need to acknowledge is that you will walk in the depths of temptation.
  • You will have things come your way…
  • You will have distractions…
  • You will have camouflaged issues that are dressed up like happiness yet in the end lead you down the path to misery…
  • You will have temptation…
  • It’s not “if” you will have temptation, but “when” you experience temptation…
  • For some of you it’s gossip…
  • For some it’s a prideful position within your heart…
  • For some it’s sexual immorality, either by thoughts or actions…
  • For some of you it’s seeking more after the worldly things over and above the spiritual things…
  • For some of you it’s alcohol…
  • For some of you it’s pornography…
  • For some it’s drugs…
  • For some it’s passiveness…setting by and watching the ones you love lead lives of destruction…
  • Temptation is rampant within this room…Temptation is common place among us.

Verse 2…

  • But here in verse 2, the word of God demands a truth that cuts against the grain of our natural thinking…
  • God’s word has prepared you for temptation…
  • In other words, God is declaring “trouble is on the way!”
  • “Be aware the the devices, lures, and schemes of the world are headed for you!”
  • “Lookout!”
  • But the church is found stumbling in and out of temptation…
  • In times of trouble, in most cases, the church is powerless and full of shame and regret…
  • How can this be?
  • We have been given the strong command of God to be joyful in the midst of suffering.
  • We have been given the directive to lean into the seasons of temptation with perseverance and faithfulness…
  • Yet, this is counter culture to the way we approach pain and suffering.
  • The is foreign to the way we approach bad news or things in this life that we are not happy with.
  • In the battle of temptation it’s as if everything that we say we believe is on the line…
  • Patience is on the line…
  • Long-suffering is on the line…
  • Our faithfulness and our trust is on the line…
  • Temptation pushes you into the moment to make a decision…
  • Decide right now who is God and Lord over your life…
  • Is this temptation your Lord?
  • Or does your submission and trust to King Jesus declare that He is Lord?
  • Is pride your Lord?
  • Is fear and anxiety your Lord?
  • Is doubt, shame, and circumstances where you have places your trust?
  • In the heat of the moment when temptation finds you the context of this scripture is to count every situation as joy…
  • Count every circumstance as joy…
  • Because the Lord is using what the evil one meant to harm you with and He is building you up as a mighty Army before the Lord.
  • That thing your going through is making you stronger…
  • That situation that keeps happening is building experience…
  • That battle that your in is building endurance…
  • Your hope is being renewed…
  • Your able to withstand and grow in power…
  • Your able to overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the words of your testimony!
  • That situation isn’t just a random situation…
  • That circumstance isn’t just an unfair tactic…
  • God is refining you!
  • God is building you!
  • Because God plans on using you!
  • God is greater than your temptation!
  • Can I show you this?
  • I want you to see this is not just my empty words…
  • I want you to see that this is full proof…
  • I want you to know that in rocky seasons you have a concrete foundation to stand…
  • Go with me to ……..

Joseph and Potiphar’s wife (Genesis 39:1-10)

Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, had bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there. The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, and he was in the house of his Egyptian master. His master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord caused all that he did to succeed in his hands. So Joseph found favor in his sight and attended him, and he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of all that he had. From the time that he made him overseer in his house and over all that he had, the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; the blessing of the Lord was on all that he had, in house and field. So he left all that he had in Joseph’s charge, and because of him he had no concern about anything but the food he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance. And after a time his master’s wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, “Lie with me.” But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, because of me my master has no concern about anything in the house, and he has put everything that he has in my charge. He is not greater in this house than I am, nor has he kept back anything from me except you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?” And as she spoke to Joseph day after day, he would not listen to her, to lie beside her or to be with her.”

  • Now pay attention here…
  • Right here in the middle of this text it would be easy to puff up your chest and think “I am Gods man, I will not compromise.”
  • Jospeh had just displayed faithfulness, integrity, and he refused to compromise.
  • Joseph didn’t bat an eye…
  • He didn’t think even for a moment that he would act on this very difficult and awkward situation…
  • Why was he so strong?
  • How did he overcome?
  • How did he have the ability to stand tall for the Lord?
  • The Bible declares that Joseph was a man of faith.
  • Joseph believed the goodness of God over and above any temporary satisfaction….
  • But I want you to see what happens next…

But one day…(Genesis 39:11-12)

But one day, when he went into the house to do his work and none of the men of the house was there in the house, she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand and fled and got out of the house.

  • I want you to notice the phrase “but one day…”
  • Isn’t this how it happens?
  • When your not expecting it…
  • When your not ready for it…
  • When your caught off guard…
  • When you didn’t even see it coming…
  • Temptation barges in the middle of your life.
  • The bible says this…
  • Joseph entered the house not thinking about what could happen…
  • Joseph entered the house casually and didn’t have his guard up…
  • Potiphar’s wife approached him out of nowhere…
  • She began saying “Lie with me! Lie with me!”
  • Continued…
  • And if you cross reference this text you’ll find that this woman was so forceful that she even ripped parts of his shirt right off of him…
  • Jospeh did exactly what your suppose to do in the middle of temptation…
  • Jospeh ran as fast as he could in the other direction…
  • He didn’t tolerate the temptation…
  • He didn’t flirt with the idea…
  • He didn’t allow his ego or his pride to be built up by this situation…
  • He didn’t hesitate for a moment…
  • Joseph decisively fled from all appearance of evil and temptation.
  • But here is where it get’s difficult and please don’t miss this…
  • Jospeh did exactly what he was suppose to do…
  • He honored God.
  • He obeyed God.
  • He was faithful and refused to compromise the integrity of our God.
  • But the bible says things got out of control…
  • Can I tell you that following Jesus will not always go according to plans…
  • Can I tell you that obeying the commands of Christ will not always look like you want it to look…
  • Your faith has to be rooted deeper than this superficial grab at morality…
  • Your faith has to be rooted deeper than this grab at popularity, fortune, or favor…
  • Your faith has to be rooted in pleasing the God the Father!
  • Your faith has to be rooted in obeying the commands of God because of your love for Christ!
  • Potiphar’s wife left this situation and began trying to taint the reputation of Joesph…
  • This woman began spreading rumors and lies claiming that Jospeh was the one tried to commit this act of adultery…
  • The Egyptian master heard this report from his wife and he was outraged.
  • The Egyptian master found Jospeh and through him into prison!
  • In other words…
  • Can you feel the emotions if you were Jospeh?
  • “But God, I did what you ask.”
  • “But God, I was faithful.”
  • “But God, how could this happen?”
  • “God are you gonna do something?”
  • Think about the panic, anxiety, and fear.
  • But you don’t see this from Joseph…
  • Listen to the text…

But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. And the keeper of the prison put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners who were in the prison. Whatever was done there, he was the one who did it. The keeper of the prison paid no attention to anything that was in Joseph’s charge, because the Lord was with him. And whatever he did, the Lord made it succeed.

  • Did you know that God is greater than your temptation and God is greater than your enemies?
  • The bible says that the Lord was with Joseph…
  • More than that the Lord showed him steadfast love and gave him favor in the sight of his enemies…
  • And whatever he did, the Lord made Joseph succeed!
  • Can I tell you that God is greater than your temptation?

Continued

  • Even in the middle of a high pressure situation, God is greater.
  • Even when you feel like you have to plead your case, God is greater.
  • Listen to me…
  • Even when it looks like that the enemy has ruined your name or a misunderstanding has the spotlight…
  • God is greater!
  • God will walk with you even when no one else is willing to.
  • God will speak on your behalf even if no one else is willing to.
  • God will prop your feet up in the presence of your enemies.
  • God will expose His favor upon you in front of the one who desires to persecute you!
  • If your just willing to be faithful, God will expose that He is greater than your temptation!

2. God is greater than your inexperience.

  • Secondly, let me say to you that God is greater than your inexperience.
  • Quickly, go back to the book of James 1:3-4…

“3Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”

  • In other words…
  • Knowing all of this…
  • Knowing what we just discovered…
  • Knowing that God is greater than your temptation…
  • Know that the trying of your faith…
  • The continued attacks from temptation only serve to build up your patience…
  • The continued assaults on your faith only takes you to new levels of strength…
  • Let patience have her perfect work…
  • Let tolerance only deepen in trust for the Lord…
  • Let your composure be renewed by the strength of Christ…
  • Let your perseverance be tried and found honoring to King Jesus…
  • Let your determination exalt the Savior of the world…
  • Let patience have her perfect work.
  • In and out of season be found trusting the Lord.
  • You see, most of us declare how worthy our situation is rather than declaring how Holy our God is.
  • In the Kingdom of God you don’t have to have a resume to honor God.
  • In the Kingdom of God you don’t have to have popularity or influence to remain faithful to God.
  • In the Kingdom of God you don’t have to have position and power to worship God.
  • You see, God is greater than your inexperience.
  • God doesn’t need your resources…
  • God doesn’t need your talents or abilities…
  • God simply desires your heart.
  • Time and time again we see this uncover all throughout the bible…
  • But there is one particular text that has always challenged my soul…
  • Within this text you see a marvelous display of courage and faith…
  • Go with me to John 6…
  • This was just after the healing at the Pool of Bethesda…
  • This was just after Jesus healed a man that had been paralyzed for 38 years….
  • Jesus had been preaching and teaching…
  • You can imagine the crowds of people wanting more and more of Jesus…
  • You can imagine the excitement of witnessing the miracles of Jesus…
  • We are going to pick it up at John 6:1…

The boy and his lunch…(John 6:1-9)

After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.” One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?“”

  • Now be sure you get this…
  • Jesus was with His disciples.
  • Jesus was with His men.
  • Jesus was with those who claim faith and they have abandoned everything just to be next to this Jesus…
  • The bible says a large crowd was following Jesus because they saw the miracles…
  • The crowd kept growing because of the healing…
  • Because of the blessings…
  • The city was already packed…
  • There were tourists and vacationers…
  • Many were preparing for the Passover and the crowds were massive…
  • Then the Bible records that Jesus took his men up on the mountain and sat down.
  • Jesus specifically calls on Phillip and asks him “Where are we to buy bread so that these people may eat?”
  • In other words…
  • In the middle of this impossible situation what are we gonna do?
  • In the middle of the chaos…
  • In the middle of the large crowds when everyone is looking for a reason to believe…
  • Jesus asked a very impactful question…
  • I began thinking “If I was with Jesus and I knew this question was coming, I’d nail this question.”
  • Jesus set Phillip up here…
  • The question is “what are we gonna do?”
  • I would have said “Oh Jesus you are surely God!”
  • “Jesus you have all authority under Heaven.”
  • “Jesus only you know how but I believe you can provide in whatever capacity that you so desire.”
  • “For my eyes have seen…”
  • “For my ears have heard…”
  • “And I have experienced the life changing power of Almighty God just by knowing you!”
  • “Jesus I believe because you are good!”
  • But Phillip says “all of our many combined together and them some wouldn’t feed these people.”
  • In other words…
  • Phillip says “impossible.”
  • “Cant happen.”
  • Can’t be done.”
  • “Unrealistic.”
  • There is no one, no amount of resources, and no way this can be done.”
  • Phillip was looking at the situation rather than looking to God…
  • Phillip was sizing up the scenario rather than lifting up his faith…
  • Is this you?
  • Have you ever been there?
  • Fear or faith?
  • Have you built up a heart of stone that is fixated on the problems around you?
  • Have you constructed a heart of unbelief that is affecting what you see?
  • Are you only seeing the heartache all around you?
  • Are you only speaking out words that continue to build strength in your obstacles?
  • Are you growing in unbelief of the power of our God?
  • Let me shift your eyes back to the bible…
  • John chapter 6:9 says “there is a boy…”
  • In other words…
  • There is one who believes…
  • There is one who sees through eyes of faith…
  • There is one who trusts the word of God…
  • There is a boy…
  • The faith of this boy was more than a one time thing…
  • The trust of this boy was more than just a situational thing…
  • This boy invaded religion…
  • This boy invaded tradition…
  • This boy invaded ceremonies and cultural gatherings…
  • The bible says that Jesus took the offering of this boy…
  • Jesus witnessed the faith of this boy…
  • Jesus witnessed the divine ignorance of this boy…
  • This boy was willing to give away his lunch just to see what God might do…
  • This boy was willing to give everything that he had just to see the glory of God on display…
  • Oh don’t you wanna be the boy?
  • Don’t you want to put your faith on display in such a way that it transcends time?
  • We need men, women, boys, and girls seeking to please God by simply trusting God.
  • Could this be main objective on our heart?
  • Stop trying to gain…
  • Stop trying to receive…
  • Just trust the spoken word of God!
  • This young man perfectly unveils our relationship to Christ…
  • Watch this…
  • The followers of Jesus, the leadership, the religion people of the day, the ones most serious about the faith…
  • They were with Jesus…
  • But they were fixated on performing for Jesus…
  • Can I tell you that when your in a relationship with Jesus that is based on you performing well enough for Jesus there will always come a day when you cannot overcome the situation…?
  • You”ll always run into the circumstances that leave you frustrated and hopeless…
  • You wanna know why?
  • You wanna know why you can’t overcome the problems in your world?
  • You wanna know why your not happy and satisfied with the situations all around you?
  • Your not God?
  • And if you not God it is your duty to trust God, honor God, and worship God.
  • It’s not your duty to earn the love of God, earn the favor of God, or earn the blessing of God.
  • These things have been freely given and will be fully exposed unto within God’s time.
  • But let me ask…
  • Are you serving King Jesus with the heart of the boy?
  • Are you responding to God when He asks of your service?
  • Christ has commanded that you be connected to a local body of believers…
  • Your commanded to be apart of the church.
  • Your not called to show up on Sunday morning and neglect the church on Monday…
  • Your called to get connected in small groups…
  • Your called to get connected in missions…
  • Continued…
  • Your called to get connected in Awana’s,
  • Your called to get connected in active relationships with a body of believers.
  • Your out of the will of God to sit…Your out of the will of God to observe…
  • You and I are called into the fullness of maximizing the glory of God…
  • And if your not serving God your surely serving yourself and there cannot be 2 Gods.
  • Are you giving unto God with the heart of the boy?
  • Are you giving to God financially as your commanded?
  • Are you giving to God just to see how He might take your offering and expose His glory?
  • The amount you give unto God is irrelevant…
  • It’s the motive upon your heart that God is after…
  • I can assure you that wherever your money is going is where your heart is.
  • If your money is reserved solely for things for you, your only sowing seeds of selfishness…
  • Yet, if your money is honoring God in your giving, your sowing seeds that will have eternal implications…
  • Listen to me…
  • This boy didn’t just give his portion that he was due…
  • You didn’t read this text and it said that the disciples approached the boy and he gave a tenth of his lunch…
  • This boy didn’t stop and tear off a portion of his lunch…
  • This would have been honoring to God…
  • If the boy would have given half of his lunch and kept some for himself, I would have still be impressed…
  • But listen to the context…
  • The bible says that this boy didn’t think of himself at all.
  • The boy didn’t rationalize the situation…
  • The boy didn’t barter back and forth with God…
  • He didn’t say things like “but God I already showed up to church, doesn’t that count?”
  • He didn’t say things like “I’m active in ministry, doesn’t this count?”
  • He didn’t say things like “How will I eat if I give my lunch away?”
  • He didn’t think of himself at all!
  • His motive was to simply trust God with his offering!!
  • In other words…
  • “Watch and see what God is about to do!!”
  • “I’m not sure what is about to happen…”
  • “I’m not sure when it’s about to happen…”
  • “Oh but God is faithful so I’ll trust…”
  • “God is good so I’ll believe…”
  • What if you came to God to give Him your trust financially, spiritually, professionally, and even personally?
  • What if your heart was to give to see what God might do?
  • What if your heart was to worship to see how God might show up?
  • What if your heart was to serve God in the private place and the public place?
  • What if every moment of every day you were actually walking closer and closer to God?
  • Oh can I tell you that God would maximize your offering ?
  • God would take your worship and multiply it throughout the community…
  • God would take your faithfulness and bring about a lost a dying world unto the gospel…
  • God would take you into His purposes and His plans and you would leave your agenda behind…
  • You don’t have to have a resume of spiritual accolades…
  • You don’t have to ensure all understand your theological disposition…
  • You don’t have to earn God’s favor or perform for a promotion from God…
  • You just gotta be faithful. You gotta be obedient. You gotta trust the Almighty leadings of God…
  • Because God is greater than your inexperience.

3. God is greater than your unbelief.

  • Not only is God greater than your temptation…
  • Not only is God greater than your inexperience…
  • God is greater than your unbelief.
  • You see, some of you are wrestling with waiting on God…
  • Some of you are wrestling with trusting God…
  • You may have been praying for years and years for a move from God…
  • You may be begging God to restore your marriage….
  • You may be begging God to change your situation or your circumstance…
  • Maybe your not seeing results…
  • Maybe your not seeing God do what you’ve ask Him to…
  • Are you willing to believe?
  • Are you willing to wait?
  • In our day in age we need men and women who are willing to trust God will all that they are and all that they have…
  • It that serious…
  • It’s getting late…
  • It’s getting dark…
  • Young people need to see Christians trust God even when its hard…
  • Lost people need to see Christians believe God over and above any bad news in our day…
  • You see, God is greater than your unbelief.
  • Just because you don’t see it or don’t feel it…
  • Just because your not willing to wait and not willing to trust…
  • God has not lost His great name…
  • God has not been setback and He is not sitting up in Heaven trying to figure out how He is going to fix this thing…
  • Our God is perfect and He is forever Holy…
  • Our God is set apart and unlike any other…
  • Our God is within perfect control…
  • His name is Jesus!
  • His words will stand until the end of time.
  • His love conquers all things and all sin.

So let me ask…

  • Do you know Jesus?
  • Do you really now this Jesus?
  • Maybe you have been in church for a long time…
  • Maybe you have heard the gospel over and over again…
  • Could I ask “are you becoming numb to the urgency of the message?”
  • Could I ask “does this word of God still piece your heart?”
  • Could I ask “are you being changed by the word of God day by day?”
  • You see…
  • When you are a child of God you seek after the word of God…
  • The word of God will alter how you live this life.
  • The word of God will place the burden of God on your heart…
  • You look at broken situation and broken people and you begin to pray for them…
  • The issues of our day, you begin to beg God to use you so may to speak a message of hope…
  • To the unloveable, hated, wicked, and outcast…
  • You begin to cry over…
  • To the despised and rejected, you begin to pray for…
  • Can I ask you Christian…
  • Are you progressing deeper and deeper within the burden of God?
  • Are you praying for God to use you and your resources for His fame and glory?
  • Are you living this life on mission for God?
  • Passionately pursuing the things of God…
  • Some of you are sitting in this room are meant to stand at preach…
  • Some of you are meant to lead in missions…
  • Some of you are meant to evangelize to your city…
  • Christian are you pursuing the things of God?
  • Would you say Pastor Tyler, just to be honest, I am a Christian but I spend little time pursing the things of God…
  • Is this you?
  • Maybe its been a long time since you have thought about God using you in a mighty way for His glory…
  • Is this you ?
  • Maybe your afraid…
  • Maybe your scared…
  • Maybe your running…
  • But just maybe your sitting here this morning and you know God is calling to for more…
  • Maybe your sitting here and you know God has put a specific calling up you…
  • If this is you…
  • Can I say to you that the church needs you?
  • The church needs to you jump all in!
  • The church needs to progress from observing to leading.
  • Maybe your hesitating….
  • Would you run to Jesus this morning…
  • Would you come and pray?
  • Would you give it to Jesus…
  • Maybe you consider yourself a prayer warrior, would you come and pray over this??
  • Would you come and pray for our church, would you come and pray for the lost, would you come and pray for the heart of the believer to stand tall?

Lastly

  • Let me ask again…
  • Do you know Jesus?
  • Can I ask you “do you know Jesus?”
  • Do you remember a specific time when you understood your need for a Savior?
  • Do you remember a specific time when you ask Jesus to save you from you sin and shame?
  • You remember being sorry and you realized that your sin made guilty…
  • You remember realizing that Jesus went to the cross for you.
  • It was your shame that caused Jesus to go to the cross.
  • It was your sin that cause Jesus to die on the cross.
  • Do you remember a time when you gave your life to Jesus?
  • What about you friend?
  • Maybe you can’t say you remember?
  • Is this you?
  • Today you can know Jesus…
  • Today you can settle this…
  • Today you can give your life to Jesus…

1. God is greater than your temptation.
2. God is greater than your inexperience.
3. God is greater than your unbelief.
In love,
Pastor Tyler

#changed – “Did you hear me?”

#changed – Did you hear me?
2 Peter 3:1-10

Introduction

  • We are gonna get straight to it this morning…
  • But let me ask…
  • What do you expect to happen today?
  • What’s your intentions?
  • What are you looking for?
  • What is your motive today?
  • Have you ever asked “what are we doing?”
  • Have you ever thought about the seriousness of the House of God?
  • Week after week we open up the Holy Word of God…
  • Time and time again we hear the divine words found within the gospel…
  • The summons to change…
  • The interchange unto submission…
  • The call to repentance…
  • But let me say it to you like this?
  • Where is the fear of God in our day?
  • Where is the Holy reverence unto Christ?
  • Where is the reverent prayer in the House of God?
  • Where is the sincere and passionate worship in the House of God?
  • When was the last time that you walked into church and the worship was so strong and the word of God was so convicting that every single one of your sins were brought before you?
  • Listen to me…
  • Raise your hand if this is the first time that you have ever been in church…
  • The message of the gospel is not new…
  • We have heard this truth over and over and over…
  • From Sunday School to Revival, we have heard the love message of the gospel…
  • “That while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!”
  • Has this truth impacted your living?
  • Has this truth invaded your heart?
  • Does it matter to you at all?

Let me say it like this…

  • The other night I came home from work and walked in to see the girls turning our living room couch into a trampoline…
  • So I had to go into dad mode…
  • I reminded them for the 1000th time that they are not allowed to stand on the couch, much less, I reminded them that they are not allowed to jump on the couch.
  • They then replied confirming that they understood…
  • So not 5 minutes later I walk back in the room and they were at it again…
  • I said “hey, did you hear me?!”
  • They knew what I said…
  • They heard what I said…
  • They just cared more about what they wanted than what they’d have to give up…
  • Can I tell you that this is the same situation with the church of the living God?
  • Most care more about what they want….
  • Most fear most what they are gonna have to give up…
  • What if we, as the people of God, were most concerned about the things of God?
  • What if we, the body of Christ, were most concerned about the things of eternity?
  • We would sacrifice the physical things for the spiritual things…?
  • We would sacrifice our preferences to pick up the power of God…?
  • We would sacrifice the temporary things to gain the eternal things…?

2 Peter 3:1-10

This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Savior: Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

  • In other words…
  • The text opens up to say “This is the second time I’ve reached out to you.”
  • “Did you hear me?”
  • “Did you hear the word of the Lord?”
  • “Are you hearing the gospel message week after week and it has no effect on you?”
  • “Are you coming to the house of God around the people of God and nothing is changing?”
  • “Are you struggling with the same things that you have always struggled with?”
  • “Are you stuck in the same place that you have always been?”
  • “Are you fighting the same battles that you have always had to fight?”
  • For some of you it’s pornography…
  • For some of you it may be drugs, alcohol, adultery, sexual immorality…
  • Are you coming to this place and your leaving unchanged and unmoved?
  • Peter is saying in a round about way “Did you hear me?”
  • In 1 Peter 1 we learned that “We are healed by a sacrifice and we are restored by faith.”
  • That the only way that you will ever step into the things of God is by and through a sacrifice…
  • Healing comes through sacrifice…
  • Power comes through sacrifice…
  • Position and authority comes through sacrifice…
  • Salvation comes through sacrificing the agenda of the world to receive the promises of God.
  • Yet, by and through faith we are restored unto God the Father.
  • “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.”
  • Restoration…
  • Healing…
  • Reconstruction…
  • Repentance…
  • All come through faith.
  • By and through faith our position before God is restored no matter the offense.
  • In 1 Peter 3 we come to the reality that its easy for the believer to give God our heart…
  • We are willing to place our faith and hope in the finished work of the cross…
  • We are willing to lift our hands in praise of all that Christ has done through grace and mercy…
  • We are willing to give God our heart, but we are reluctant to give God our trust.
  • And we come to 2 Peter chapter 2 and Peter is saying “Did you hear me?”
  • “Pay attention…I write unto to motivate you unto the faith.”
  • And the first thing he proclaims here 2 Peter 3…”Be mindful of the word of God.”

1. Be mindful of the word of God.

  • Be mindful of the words which were spoken before you…
  • Be mindful of the words of the holy prophets…
  • Be mindful of the divine word of God…
  • This truth is meant to stir your affections towards Christ…
  • This truth is meant to motivate your living towards the purity of Christ…
  • This truth is meant to encourage you to stall tall for the fame of Christ…
  • Go with me to Genesis 6…
  • I want you to see the byproduct of obeying the word of God…
  • Listen to the words found in Genesis 6:5…

The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, an that every intentions of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him to His heart. So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God. And Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight, and the earth was filled with violence. And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth. Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch.”

  • God then lays out the dimension of the ark and gave Noah every detail for this Ark…
  • Listen to the grace that was extended unto Noah…

“For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life under heaven. Everything that is on the earth shall die. But I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.”

  • Verse 22 says that “Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.”
  • Pay attention here…
  • It is widely believed that it took Noah 120 years to construct the Ark ordered by God…
  • Noah witnessed the birth if his sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
  • Noah witnessed increasing wickedness, corruption, and unbelief.
  • Noah witnessed and endured persecution because of His faith…
  • Noah was laying the foundation of a legacy of faith unto his sons…
  • Noah’s sons watched their father press on with the command of God…
  • Knowing that hatred would be coming…
  • Knowing that mockery would be coming…
  • Knowing that oppression would be coming…
  • Noah laid a foundation to be mindful of the word of God over above the acceptance of man.
  • The faith of Noah was about much more that his own salvation upon the ark…
  • The faith of Noah was about much more than living out one of the most remarkable and well known truths in the bible…
  • Did you know that Noah’s faith affected his sons…?
  • Did you know that Noah’s faith affected generations…?
  • Did you know that Noah’s son Shem was set apart by the handed down example of faith…?
  • Shem was a generational blessing by and through the power of faith…
  • Can I show you this truth?
  • Can I show you the power and influence of a heart of faith?
  • We need to rewind just a little as this begins back in Genesis 3:15…
  • This book of Genesis records one of the most heartbreaking events in all of scripture…
  • This is just after the fall…
  • This is just after Adam & Eve have shattered the holy covenant of God and sin enters the world….

Genesis 3:14-15…
14 The Lord God said to the serpent,
“Because you have done this,
cursed are you above all livestock
    and above all beasts of the field;
on your belly you shall go,
    and dust you shall eat
all the days of your life.
15
I will put enmity between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring[e] and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.”

Jesus paid it all…

  • Now follow me here…
  • God promises to place enmity between the serpent and the woman…
  • God promises to place enmity between the offspring of Satan and the offspring of the woman eve…
  • Now, who is the offspring of the serpent?
  • The serpent is Satan…
  • The offspring of Satan is the 1/3 of fallen angels that are with him…
  • The offspring of Satan is the unbeliever maturing in the spirit of atheism…
  • Now who is the woman referencing?
  • The bible is speaking of Eve…
  • Who is the offspring of Eve?
  • Let’s fast-forward down through the ages unto a virgin girl named Mary…
  • Who is the offspring of Mary?
  • Oh can I tell you that Genesis 3:15 is speaking of the King of the ages?!!!
  • Can I tell you that the offspring of Mary is none other than King Jesus!
  • He is reigning in power and He has all authority!
  • The bible gives us the reality that Satan will indeed bruise the heal of Christ…
  • When Christ took the sinfulness of mankind to the cross…
  • Christ was bruised beyond recognition….
  • Christ was battered and bruised on your behalf…
  • Christ was bruised for me!
  • Oh but can I tell you that the bruise of Christ healed my soul?!
  • The bruise of Christ covered my sin and shame.
  • The bruise of Christ adopted me into the righteousness of God the Father.
  • There is power in the covering of Christ!
  • This bruising wasn’t final but just the beginning of my life!
  • The bible records that although Christ was beaten beyond recognition…
  • The bible records that Christ was unrecognizable…
  • Oh but the bible records that not one bone of the all authoritative Jesus was broken…
  • This is supernatural…
  • This is heavenly…
  • This is power…
  • Because of His power over death, Hell, and the grave you and I can stand boldly in the presence of King Jesus!
  • Oh but the text goes on…
  • The bible declares that this offspring of this woman will crush the head of the Serpent…
  • In this moment the serpent has accomplished his mission…
  • In this moment it seems as if Satan has derailed the plan of God…
  • Oh but let me show you that Satan didn’t mess up the plan of God…
  • Let me show you that in his divine ignorance, Satan only help setup the plan of God…
  • Can I show you the power of being mindful of the word of God???
  • Can I show you whats on the line of you will be faithful??
  • This question is are you willing to trust the word of God?
  • Are you willing to wait on the power of God?
  • Are you willing to remain steadfast in the face of persecution to live out of the authority of God?
  • I’m gonna fast forward from Genesis 3 down to Genesis 5…

Adam’s Descendants to Noah
5:1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. 2 Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man[a] when they were created. 3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. 4 The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters. 5 Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died.
6 When Seth had lived 105 years, he fathered Enosh. 7 Seth lived after he fathered Enosh 807 years and had other sons and daughters. 8 Thus all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died.
9 When Enosh had lived 90 years, he fathered Kenan. 10 Enosh lived after he fathered Kenan 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 11 Thus all the days of Enosh were 905 years, and he died.
12 When Kenan had lived 70 years, he fathered Mahalalel. 13 Kenan lived after he fathered Mahalalel 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 14 Thus all the days of Kenan were 910 years, and he died.
15 When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he fathered Jared. 16 Mahalalel lived after he fathered Jared 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 17 Thus all the days of Mahalalel were 895 years, and he died.
18 When Jared had lived 162 years, he fathered Enoch. 19 Jared lived after he fathered Enoch 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20 Thus all the days of Jared were 962 years, and he died.
21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah. 22 Enoch walked with God[b] after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years. 24 Enoch walked with God, and he was not,[c] for God took him.25 When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he fathered Lamech. 26 Methuselah lived after he fathered Lamech 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27 Thus all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he died.28 When Lamech had lived 182 years, he fathered a son 29 and called his name Noah, saying, “Out of the ground that the Lord has cursed, this one shall bring us relief[d] from our work and from the painful toil of our hands.” 30 Lamech lived after he fathered Noah 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31 Thus all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died.32 After Noah was 500 years old, Noah fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

  • Oh did you see what just took place?
  • Did you catch the power of faith?
  • Did you see the outcome of being mindful of the word of God?
  • Listen to me…
  • Will you trust Jesus???
  • Noah laid the foundation of faith…Noah broke the cycle of sin by and through faith!
  • Resting in the bloodline of Noah was the power of Christ…
  • Noah deposited his faith unto his son Shem…
  • Shem has the very same bloodline of the one who will crush the head of the enemy.
  • Generation after generation…
  • Believer after believer…
  • Adam all the way to Noah…
  • From Noah to his sons…
  • From Noah and his sons down through the ages to Christ Jesus…
  • Jesus is the victory…
  • Maybe you feel like your just another story…
  • Maybe you feel like life has passed you by…
  • Maybe you feel like your past has haunted you…
  • Maybe you feel like there is not future for you…
  • Can I remind you that in faith you have a future and you have strength?
  • Can I remind you that in faith you have influence and you have more than a story, you’ll have a legacy?
  • Can I remind you that you have the power within your bloodline to crush the head of Satan?
  • Can I remind you that within the mighty name of Jesus, you have control and authority?
  • Crush his lies.
  • Crush his temptations.
  • Crush his lures and his devices.
  • Crush his attempt to steal your joy.
  • Crush his distractions for false truths.
  • Crush his false view of happiness.
  • Oh can I tell you that when you are mindful to the very word of God you have power to crush the damning lies of the enemy?
  • Did you hear me?
  • You have victory waiting for you?
  • You have joy waiting for you?
  • But it has to come through a heart of faith…
  • It has to come through the heart of submission…
  • It has to come through the heart of trust…
  • To be mindful of the word of God is to know the word of God and trust the word of God!

2. Be mindful of the promise of God.

  • Quickly, go back with me to 2 Peter 3:3…

Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

  • In other words…
  • The bible speaks of a day approaching of where the faith of many will wax cold…
  • The word of God foretells of a day of when the unbelief of man will transition into mockery…
  • There will be no tolerance of the things of God…
  • There will be no trust in the word of God…
  • There will be no faithfulness of seeking after the promises of God…
  • But cling to and be mindful of the promises of God…
  • The promises of God are not dependent upon your performance…
  • The promises of God are not dependent upon your timeline…
  • The promises of God are not dependent upon you at all…
  • The scary reality is that we are simply not willing to wait on the promises of God…
  • In other words…
  • We do not trust God…
  • By not trusting God we begin to take things into our own hands…
  • We begin to act rather than trust…
  • We begin to speak out rather than listen…
  • We begin to panic rather than wait…
  • We begin to worry rather than obey…

This is the very definition of pride…

  • We begin to proclaim back to God things like…
  • “I know how to fix this.”
  • “I know what I need.”
  • “I know what I need to make me happy and to satisfy me.”
  • We even begin to believe things like…
  • “I can earn the goodness of God.”
  • “I can earn the favor of God.”
  • “I can work for the power of God.”
  • And we become infatuated with our own achievements missing out on the move of God…
  • Settling for what you can do…
  • Settling for your talent and and abilities…
  • But hear me…
  • Your never going to be satisfied with living this life based on your own abilities…
  • Your never going to be sustained by living this life based on your own power…
  • Let me show you this…

Exodus 2:11-15
One day, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and looked on their burdens, and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people. He looked this way and that, and seeing no one, he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. When he went out the next day, behold, two Hebrews were struggling together. And he said to the man in the wrong, “Why do you strike your companion?” He answered, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid, and thought, “Surely the thing is known.” When Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and stayed in the land of Midian. And he sat down by a well.

  • In other words…
  • Moses was hand delivered by the providence of God…
  • The Pharaoh had just ordered death to the birth of all Hebrew males born
  • The Pharaoh south to oppress and control the people…
  • Yet, baby Moses was floated down the river, escaping death, and fulfilling the very plan of God.
  • Moses was placed in this specific time in history for a specific reason…
  • Moses was to lead his people out of captivity into freedom.
  • So hear me…
  • Moses had the divine placement of God on his life…
  • Moses had the divine provision of God on his life…
  • Moses had the divine power of God on his life…
  • Moses even had the divine burden of God on his life…
  • Yet, Moses wasn’t willing to wait on the divine plan of God on his life…
  • Moses was ready to take things into his own hands…
  • In other words…
  • Moses said things like “I know how to fix this.”
  • “I know what I need.”
  • “I know what will satisfy me.”
  • “I know how to control this.”
  • So Moses began to act rather than trust…
  • Moses began to speak out rather than listen…
  • Moses began to panic rather than wait…
  • Moses began to worry rather than obey…
  • Moses, full of the burden of God of the Hebrew people, decided it was time to do something.
  • Moses thought he could control the situation…
  • Moses thought no one could see him…
  • Moses then struck down the Egyptian who was attacking his Hebrew brother…
  • Moses murdered this Egyptian…
  • So follow me here…
  • Moses was given the divine placement of God…
  • Moses was given the divine provision of God…
  • Moses was given the divine power of God…
  • Moses was given the divine burden of God…
  • Moses even acted out of the burden that he had for his people…
  • But listen to me…
  • He didn’t rely on the promise of God…
  • He relied on the power of self…
  • He didn’t rely on the provision of God…
  • He relied on the position of pride…
  • Can I tell you that unless you wait on the promises of God you’ll always settle for the limitations of man?!
  • Can I tell you that unless you remain faithful within the things of God you will sacrifice your joy and peace?!
  • You better learn how to abide in Christ or this grab at religion will destroy you…
  • Are you walking with Christ?
  • Are you talking with Christ?
  • Are you maturing in relationship with Christ?
  • Or are you trying to perform?
  • Are you just trying to be good enough not to make God mad at you?
  • Are you trying hard enough just to get the favor of God without the presence of God?
  • You can be at the right place at the right time with the right power source with the right reasons and still miss out on the blessings of God…
  • Because we don’t fight our battles with performance or proving that we are qualified enough…
  • We fight our battles in faith…
  • Moses lost this truth in this moment…
  • Moses began trying to perform for God…
  • His heart was pure as he was trying to bring about freedom for his Hebrew brother…
  • Yet, his actions exposed that his motive was bathed in unbelief.
  • Moses couldn’t wait on God, something had to be done now.
  • Moses couldn’t rely on God, he had to act now.
  • Moses couldn’t trust God, no progress was being made.

Be mindful of the word of God…
Be mindful of the promise of God…
In love,
Pastor Tyler
